No Rizal bust or monument in Pavia? That's strange... really strange! Why Bern? bakit? Nga-a? Pinasahi gali inyo nga banwa.

So how does Pavia conduct the ceremonial Rizal Day event without any monument in the plaza?

there's few more towns in Iloilo that doesn't have Rizal's monument. Besides, it's not a big deal in the province ang Rizal's Day amidst national holiday siya. I was thinking we're bit of a snob when it comes to this matter. We don't pay much tribute due to Rizal. Remembetr that there was an article in The News Today that Ilonggos tend to shy away heroes even their very own Graciano Lopez Jaena? We're more of an anti than a pro when it comes to this matter. I think it was Kirby's post re: Rizal subject where he's teacher were so pissed cos nobody took it seriously. Amo man ina natabo sa amon. Or maybe in depende sa batch lang pero amon batch sang una nga may subject nga Rizal, pirmi lang naga-absent. What a sad state indeed.

Speaking of heroes, I haven't seen any monuments dedicated to Teresa Magbanua (known as "The Jean d'Arc/Joan of Arc of the Visayas) in Pototan. Only a road (main street of the town) named after her.

@Berniemack: That't our problem back in Iloilo. Even Graciano Lopez Jaena. Dapat tani mas pasidunggan pa ini sila sang mga Ilonggo kay they are a real Ilonggo heroes. Pero what we are insinuating at present is ang lango-lango sa mga heroes nga ini. But of course, ang mga bata wala na gana kung sin-o man ina ang hero nag ina and ang kontribusyon nila sa aton present society. Whether how influential they were in the past. Tama gid ina siguro hambal sang iban nga ang mga heroes, ginatiro na lang.

oh so sorry @Spacewagon. No intention of diverting our threas into another Rizal thread or the like. I think it's just a passing comment since the topic was brought up by our posters.

no problem @j_pol. Space is just being playful though.
_______________

Pre-war streets of Iloilo (1)

The oldest street in Iloilo city (in fact, in West Visayas), is Calle Santo Rosario. It was constructed circa 1616 to connect the plaza to La Fuerza del Santo Rosario (now Fort San Pedro).

It was where the first grand religious procession (also in West Visayas) was held when the Spanish soldiers carried the image of Santo Rosario from the fort to the plaza celebrating their recent victory over the Dutch invaders in 1616.

The next street built was Calle Real (now Jose Ma. Basa St. - a friend of Rizal) which is the equivalent of the King's Highway in England. It starts from a corner of the plaza going southward to what is now Plazoleta Gay. This was the business section of Iloilo during the Spanish time up to the present.

Then followed Iznart Street named after Gov. Manuel Iznart from Casa Gobierno (provincial capitol) up to the shores where the Maria Clara statue is now. At that time, there was a small port there. At about its midway, Iznart St. meets Calle Real at Plazoleta Gay. Later, Iznart St. was extended northward up to Jaro bridge (now Forbes Bridge). This extension is now called Bonifacio Drive.

On the other hand, Calle Real was also extended up to where it meets the road in Baluarte to Molo at what is now Bonifacio monument in Tanza. This extension is named Ledesma Street in honor of Anastacio Ledesma who donated the road site.

After Iloilo was declared an international port in 1885, British vice Consul to Iloilo, Sir Nicholas Loney caused the building of a road along the west bank of Iloilo river which is now called Muelle Loney where the port of Iloilo is now.

Loney also built Calle Progreso (now Isidro de la Rama St.) connecting Muelle Loney with another corner of the plaza. Later, other roads were built from Muelle Loney up to Calle Real – Calle San Jose de Calasanz (now part of Ortiz Street) and Calle Arsenal, where the armory of the Spaniards was located.

On the third corner of the plaza was built Via Plana (now Gen. Robert P. Hughes St. - American military commander in Visayas) connecting it to Fort San Pedro.

Hey, there’s no need to say sorry j-pol. Kantyawan lang namin yan dito.

So, you spent your high school years in Iloilo… are you an Ilonggo then or just happened to be in Iloilo due to unavoidable circumstances?

It would be more appropriate if you post them at the Bacolod & Negros Occ thread Animo.

That's right. Funtecha's forte is history. Anyway, Mr. Salvilla do write about Iloilo's past as well. Not as often as Funtecha's does but time and again, you'll see Salvilla's Iloilo past write ups.
