Jaro Belfry

The iconic Jaro Belfry before the big quake. I guess this is circa 30's-early 40's prior to the 1948 Lady Caycay quake.

Hopefully the details will be restored too.

Municipalities of Iloilo

I would like to share this link: http://www.oocities.org/dost6/iloilo...ipalities.html

If you click through each municipality (link) you will see the history of the different municipalities of the province.

It is worthwhile to note that some of these municipalities existed already before the Spanish colonization. It's good to read the stories about Datu Puti, Datu Paiburong, etc...

During the Malay period, Panay was divided into three: Hamtic, Irong-irong and Aklan.

Wala lang, hopefully someday can consolidate the different histories of Iloilo municipalities before Spanish era... worth investigating!

While reading through the history of the different municipalities of Iloilo, I was intrigued by the history of the province before the Spanish colonization. Google by google, I was lead to Suludnon-Bukidnon of Panay.

Deym, I am an Ilonggo by blood and by heart, but I realized I know so little about my cultural heritage... I can certainly say that a certain portion of my blood is Suludnon-Bukidnon (from my grandmother).

Now, I am addicted to read more about them, to know more about Hinilawod... to know about their culture, their ways and language.

So, I have to include in my bucket list - To experience the culture of Suludnon-Bukidnon of Panay.

Now, I know that Ligbok is the mother language of Karay-a, Aklanon and Hiligaynon. And I want to hear the natives saying this language.

To all ilonggo forumers here... is it possible for us to change this thread to Iloilo and Panay Heritage Watch? It is time for us to include the Panayanons in this endeavor. After-all we are just one... from one heritage. What do you think?

I am not sure if this has been posted already...

Legarda airs support for preservation of cultural traditions of Sulodnon

Quote:
“The chant of Federico Caballero is so beautiful,” Legarda said referring to the epic chanter from Calinog, Iloilo, who has been declared as a National Living Treasure.

The Sulodnon is found in the mountains of Central Panay. Initially studied by anthropologist F. Landa Jocano, they have a rich cultural tradition that dates back to pre-colonial Spanish period and have been the cultural keeper of the longest known epic in the country called “Hinilawod.”
complete article here.

Its a difficult task. Given that most of our written historical accounts in pre-Spanish colonial era doesn't exist or was only referred by outsiders. There is also lack of references and codices from Spanish friars since some of them were zealous with their Catholic faith (hence, why Maya civilization is "shrouded with mystery") or were a bit general in their writings. Diri na magsulod si anthropology.

At least we have to thank Fray Hernandez OSA for doing a research of towns in Panay. But the archives in Manila and Jaro I guess show more, albeit still hidden.

Amu na ang naging dilemma sa Amaya, the researchers tried to make one grand narrative for pre-Spanish colonial Philippines--hence they are mixing this and that, just to make it more identifiable to pre-Spanish colonial "Filipinos." That's why the binukot issue exited before.

Back then, the only consolidated nations that exist were in Maguindanao (Mindanao), Lanao Confederacy and Sulu Sultanate.

Jalaud is Jalaur River. The same river that runs at banwa Calinog, ciudad Passi, some parts of San Enrique and Dingle, Pototan-Barotac Nuevo, Bangga Bante in Zarraga and all the way to Nabitasan in Leganes.

The same river that will be the targeted source area for MIWD.

These Sulod Bukidnon people are the last remaining Panayanon that still practices pre-Spanish colonial era culture. There were accounts that the Sulod were expert ship builders. Able to build ships despite being at the most interior parts of Panay--and yes through Jalaur. I woudn't blame why...their epics are full of water.

The practice of binukot itself is considered dead by most cultural workers and scholars. No one in the new generation of Sulod would like to just remain in the mountains, memorize epics, and do only certain tasks.
