New York City had 532 murders in 2010, a bit below my estimate of 540. Here's how the past years have been.
2002 - 587 first year to have under 600 murders since 1963 which had 548 2003 - 596 2004 - 572 2005 - 540 2006 - 596 2007 - 496 2008 - 523 2009 - 471 2010 - 532

Los Angeles ends 2010 with 297 murders. that would be the 8th year in a row with a drop.

Monterrey murder rate in 2010 was 19 per 100,000 or something close to it. The worst in Monterrey history.

I think Stockholm Metro ended at 32 but im not sure yet.
If thats the case it would give us a rate of about 1.6/100.000 it's always hard to find out here since the official statistics bureau counts all reportings, which could mean that one murder has two reportings and therefore double-ing the numbers. According to these stats there has been something like 90 murders. The numbers are usually about half than that. So my numbers of 32 is only the murders i counted from the big newspapers search-engines.

Indeed, though the levels of the early 90s were astonishingly high for a modern developed world city.Rome is super-impressive for an urban area of that size! The Metropolitan (London) police website is reporting 118 homicides in the year to Nov 2010 compared to 130 in the year to Nov 2009. A reduction of 9% and a rate of something like 1.6/100k. I think that's the lowest for quite some years.

Chicago ended with 435, which were very segregated physically and racially across the city.
Homicides: Black: 332 Hispanic: 84 White: 18 Asian: 1 Population: Black: 34% Hispanic: 27% White: 34% Asian: 5% Per 100,000: Black: 34.3/100,000 Hispanic: 10.92/100,000 White: 1.86/100,000 Asian: 0.66/100,000 The rate overall was 15/100,000. That rate doesn't mean much though, as a large proportion of the city had a rate of around 1-4/100,000. A fairly small section of the city had over half the murders, and around 18% of the population. Those people live in areas with around 39/100,000. 60% of murders involved gangs, and 80% of people murdered had prior arrest records with our police department. The police department reported that a majority of the crime in the city happened on only 8% of the city's streets (going block by block). Still though 435 murders is much better than the roughly 950 we had back in the 1990's!

One thing though is that a VAST majority of those murders were happening in select areas around the cities, and involved gang wars. Most people in those cities just sat back and watched it all happen without being involved. It wasn't random people getting shot walking around in the city center or going to work as much as it was young minorities going wild on each other. Which is intereting that during the 1990's was when people started flocking back into the older cities in the USA - which was very strange as that was also the time period that the crime rates were peaking. There were just two sides to the cities. The normal areas where most people lived, and the hell holes. The difference now is the hell holes have really calmed down - but they're still there.

84 people were murdered in the state of New South Wales (population 7,100,000) in 2009. NSW was the third safest state in Australia for homicides (per captia) in 2009, the murder rate being 1.18/100,000.
The most dangerous in 2009, by far, was the Northern Territory, with 9 murders for a population of 230,000, a murder rate of 3.96/100,000. This is not too bad considering in 2006 the murder rate was 7.97/100,000. The state in Australia with the lowest murder rate was Victoria (population 5,550,000), with 50 murders, a murder rate of 0.9/100,000.

London Ontario had 7 murders in 2010 which is quite high {for London} as in 2008 there were only 2 and 3009 had 3. That's thing with smaller cities the bigger the year varies.
Still a very low rate for a city of 385,000. |

San Francisco (city proper, pop. 815,000):
-50 murders in 2010 -3 murders so far in 2011 2010's total was up from 47 in 2009, which was the lowest the murder rate had been since 1965. Both were much lower than the 100 and 99 murders that were recorded in 2007 and 2008. The SF metro area (pop. 7.5 million) had probably around 200-250 murders in both '09 and '10, which is down from 300-350 in '08 and '07. |

Still a pretty good improvement. Didn't Recife have a homicide rate of 100/100k just 3 or 4 years ago?

A year has gone and in it Denmark had 45 murders..( 0,81 per 100k ) up 4 from 2010
2010 Copenhagen City: 9 ( pop 1.181.000 ) = 0,76 per 100k Copenhagen Municipal: 4 ( pop 531.000 ) = 0,75 per 100k Copenhagen Metro Area: 18 ( pop 1.901.000 ) = 0,94 per 100k Copenhagen municipal is down, the city is at the same level and the municipal is up slightly after 2 gruesome cases where dads killed their own kids and in one of the cases the mother too.. So another year where Copenhagen is statistically safer than the country overall.. but Metro passed the national figure unlike last year.. All cases has been solved... 2 x gang related murders ( both shot ) 1 x assisted suicide ( old woman with cancer had her husband help ) 10 x family/partner/ex-partner ( 4 kids, 2 wives, 1 partner, 3 ex's ) 1 x mentally ill stabbing his social worker to death 3 x deaths from injuries sustained doing fights 1 x choked to death after robber entered her hotel room
