The city of Chicago had 50 murders in May. Despicable.

Here is the crime update for my old neighborhood in Chicago (Albany Park).
http://spotcrime.com/il/chicago/albany+park

My suburb where I moved in Dec 2010, is very peaceful. It hasn't seen a murder in years if ever.

We had our 23rd murder of 2012 today, after a shoot up at a local ice cream parlour. That is two less than this date last year.

Sheesh! Scary.

There have been 36 murders in London so far this year, according to http://www.citizensreportuk.org/repo...n-murders.html. Dunno if it takes a while for more recent ones to get uploaded so there might be a few more not counted. There were 61 murders by this date in 2011. Hoping we might get under 100 murders this year.

Peoria, IL (USA) up to 7 homicides as of early Sunday morning. I've lost count of the number of other violent crimes that have occurred throughout the city and Summer's, just, beginning. But, don't be fooled by it's crime statistics. MY hometown is, actually, a very nice place to live and visit....

6/100.000 in Uruguay
8/100.000 in Montevideo
Murder rate remains low in comparison to other Latin American countries, yet thanks to our sensationalistic media, some people here are convinced that they live in an unbearably insecure country.

8 is pretty high for Mdeo, considering its half that of a city like Bogota (which has terrible fame).

Yes, a horrible statistic, more than 75% of them gang related.

Believe it or not the most violent epic in Chicago was back in the late 80's and early 90's when some 900+ people were being murdered each year.

So far this year about 235 people have been murdered in the city of Chicago.

Do you know why there were so many more murders in the late 80's and early 90 's ? Gang related as well back than as well ?

Yes, that's when gang numbers, exploded, as well as the crack cocaine drug trade. Today, there is no leadership in a couple of the largest gangs in Chicago dead or in jail), so there is a lot of in fighting.

It seems average compared to the early 90's figures.

DOes those figures are just for the City /County of CHicago, or includes Metro Area?, seems pretty high for a developed country.

Those figures are only for the city of Chicago, but murders outside the city in the suburbs and surrounding counties of the metro area are rare, that is except for Gary Indiana which is a hell hole.

Well the parts of the city which sees the vast majority of the murders, is basically a bombed out gang infested ghetto.

Yes...gangs have been doing their thing for many decades. In 1850 alone in NYC there were over 200 recorded gang wars, so I'm sure they were prominent in 1974 Chicago.

In the early 1970s was a few years after MLK's assassination, which led to riots, and large sections of the South and particularly West side being burned. The gangs at that point took advantage of the despair in those communities and began organizing into mega gangs. Disciples, Vicelords, Black Stones.... A similar situation was happening in LA with the Crips and Bloods.

There are literally 100000 gang members in the city of Chicago, with an additional 15000-20000 throughout the suburbs.. You also had racial conflict as white flight out of the city accelerated when Hispanics and Blacks began moving into traditionally white ethnic neighborhoods.

Today most (but not all) of the African American communities are complete wastelands. 180000 African Americans left the city in the last 10 years, and I am sure just as many if not more will leave come time of the 2020 census. Many Hispanic communities are also gang infested, which is why Hispanic growth rate in the city went from 25000 a year during the 1990's to a mere 2500 a year during this last decade.

Given a population of around 4million, then Chicago city is a bit more violent than I could imagine. Monterrey just surpass the 600 mark after a split in regional Cartels that get on war at the early 2010. (We ended 2010 with around 800 murders).

The city of Chicago doesn't have 4 million, it has 2.7 million with about 9.8 million in the metro area.
