23 or 24 murders in the city of Wilmington. Not good for a city with only 72,000 people. That works out to about 33 murders per 100,000 people.

Kanton Zurich, 1.2mio (it's about the same in pop as the agglomeration so I guess it would be about the same). But Wilmington is absolutly shocking
Where is it?

I found this shocking number for Switzerland (7.4mio):
2000 – 2004: 381 killins, BUT 206 of them have been commeted by family members! The chance that you are shot on the streets by a gangster or a stray bullet is very low, but beware of your parents and partners!!! There is a trend recently that especially family fathers confronted with a difficult situation erade the whole family before killing themselves. There were also cases of amuck - guys who have problem with the stress level in their work rush into the company and shoot everyone. At least it's not like in Germany or the US yet, where that happens at school!

according to Chile's Interior Ministry, in 2005, there were 301 homicides in Chile (total population of a little over 16million), giving it a rate of about 1.7 per 100k inhabitants, by far the lowest in Latin America.
according to America Economia magazine, the rate for Santiago was about 1.4/100,000 inhabitants. Detroit had 402 killings, giving it a rate of 42.04/100,000 population (according to the FBI)

As for American cities I found this list on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_..._by_crime_rate I could not find one for European cities. Did anyone find it? |

![]() Seriously: probably it has something to do that we are a big middle class society (although there are a lot of extremly rich and poor but the majority lives quite well) and have a direct democracy system with a combination of social state and free market. Another example for our world-famous comprimising behaviour, probably the root for our national peace

It depends. The federal statistics collected by the US government include "murder and non-negligent manslaughter." The stats I gave for Portland include that as well as "justified" killings by police officers.

Found these online of my homestate, Iowa (USA).
These are for 2005 rates per 100,000 for the urban areas(with population): Cedar Rapids .... 245,529.... Rate... 0.4 Iowa City.... 137,950.... Rate... 0.7 Des Moines.... 513,940.... Rate... 1.2 Waterloo.... 162,564.... Rate... 0.6 Ames.... 80,727.... Rate... 0.0 Sioux City.... 143,872.... Rate... 1.4 This equals 9 homicides for the 1,284,582 people in Iowa's cities. Neighboring States: Omaha.... 808,810.... Rate... 4.1 Rochester.... 175,945.... Rate... 0.0 Lincoln.... 280,043.... Rate... 1.4 Grand Rapids.... 768,164.... Rate... 1.6 Appleton.... 214,153.... Rate... 0.9 Eau Claire.... 153,906.... Rate... 0.6 Madison.... 534,388.... Rate... 0.4 Wausau.... 128,363.... Rate... 0.0 Not too bad overall, around 25 homicides for 3,539,544 people ( I took out Omaha's rate since it was many times larger than the rest ). Of course I looked at a lot of medium sized cities in these states that were fairly safe, more on par with what I grew up around in Iowa. Last edited by Chicagoago; January 10th, 2007 at 08:18 PM. |
