São Paulo "city" ( in the meaning of the area that is under only the same mayor rule, the same municipality ) has a lot of slums inside, including the most dangerous ones in the metropolitan area. If you consider only the downtown, this rate is far better than 18.39.

Differently from other cities, in São Paulo the "main city" is actually the biggest part of the metropolitan area, including a lot of poor and violent areas, differently from cities like Buenos Aires or Paris.

In the metropolitan area, there are more than 30 municipalities. In this area, you have cities like Carapicuiba which has a rate of 25.32 per 100.000, and also others like São Caetano do Sul, which has a rate of 5.10 murdersa per 100.000.

Copenhagen have hit 7 murders after a 21 immigrant was shot while in a car with 2 others last night - it is suspected to be gang related as all the persons are known for belonging to a group who among other things sells drugs

This week have seen a lot of events around the city indicating that 2 large groups are fighting for control over the drug scene in one or more parts of the metro city..

Newest murder in Utah (actually, it was self-defense, but worth mentioning anyway): 2 people broke into a house and robbed it in West Valley City, killing a dog in the process (no, that wasn't the murder ). After they robbed the house, the husband was able to grab the gun from one of the suspects and shoot him, killing him in the process. However, I don't really think this qualifies as murder, it's more of a self-defense.

On December 12th, My hometown, Peoria IL reported It's 17th homicide of the year. It's, often, drug/gang-related since We're centrally located between the Chicago and St. Louis metros. Our homicide figure is puny by Their comparisons, But It illustrates the times We ALL live in!

A, similar, figure last year (2006) included a serial killer's victims.

No, I meant what's going on in SF that's pushing its murders past 100?
The comparison was for shock value. A city of 760,000 with 100 murders and then a city of 8.2 million with 450 murders. Almost three times the rate in SF.

When I read your numbers... I'm not sure if I'm supposed to laugh... or cry ...

Caracas, Venezuela's Murder Rate:

62.93 (1998)
107 (2007)

In Carabobo State (Where i live)
59 (2007) .....

As It's shown here (In Spanish):

Many of you would consider we have war here, actually we do. But I'm not scared of living here, you finally get familiar with it.

Greetings to everyone

It's not like it's that out the ordinary for SF. SF has averaged just about 87 murders per year for the past 23 years.

here's the whole list, which I posted a couple pages back:

San Francisco:

1985 - 85
1986 - 114
1987 - 103
1988 - 92
1989 - 73
1990 - 101
1991 - 95
1992 - 117
1993 - 133
1994 - 91
1995 - 104
1996 - 82
1997 - 59
1998 - 58
1999 - 64
2000 - 59
2001 - 63
2002 - 68
2003 - 74
2004 - 88
2005 - 96
2006 - 86
2007 - 100 (to date)

It means that SF's murder rate has remained relatively stable since 1985, whereas NYC's has dropped drastically. NYC has made progress, whereas SF is same old, same old (there was a drop in the late 90's-early 2000's though, as you can see)
