Bangladeshi Cities & Towns

Over the last decade a silent revolution has swept through Bangladesh's cities, towns and villages. We already have threads on the major cities so this one will concentrate on the smaller districts, aside their natural beauty, we can also post their development work.

Anyway, here is the Islamic University of Kushtia in Kushtia district.

Pabna is a city in the west-central region of Bangladesh. It is also the biggest city of the Pabna district. It is located on the Padma river (Ganges) and has a population of 138,000. Hardinge Bridge, a steel railway bridge over the Padma located near Pabna is a link between western and northern Bangladesh. Before partition of British India, it used to be a big rail stop for the Assam and Darjeeling bound trains from Calcuttta. Pabna has the biggest Mental Hospital in the country.

It is a major industrial area, especially in textiles. It also holds the remains of the Hindu Temple of Jor Bangla.

Barisal (Bengali: বরিশাল) is a city in southern Bangladesh. The city lies in the Padma (Ganges) River delta on an offshoot of the Kirtonkhola River.

Due to its location and easy access to both riverine and marine navigation channels, it has become a transshipment center for rice, hides, and pulses. Bakery, textile, pharmaceutical products are output of a few industrial installation. It is linked by steamer with Dhaka (73 miles [117 km] north) and with Chittagong to the southeast. Road communication improved in last decade with building of few bridges.

The city is also home to some of the country's most prestigious colleges including Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital, Barisal Medical College (est. 1889), Barisal BM College and Oxford Mission High School (est. 1990).

This is the silent revolution I'd been talking about, empowerment of women, education to all and much more. This has happened in many villages of Bangladesh and is spreading faster than ever.

Tractors are quickly replacing the traditional use of bulls for ploughing. As a result Bangladesh has yielded several bumper crops over the last few years.

Also, infrastructure development has greatly benefited the people.

Narayanganj is a city in central Bangladesh. It is located near the capital city of Dhaka and has a population of 220,000. The city is on the bank of the Shitalakshya River. The river port of Narayanganj is one of the oldest in Bangladesh. It is also a center of business and industry, especially the jute trade and processing plants, and the textile sector of the country.

I agree with you Banglabir. Don't forget about some other cities too, just look at Bhairab Bazar, Bogra, Ghatail Upazila etc.

Soon Dhaka Metropolitan will grow into these nearby cities the way it is growing.

This is Kurigram, one of the districts which were once prone to famine. Now golden crop can be seen growing proudly once were hunger and misery was so common.

Such change can be seen not only in places like Kurigram which were previously impoverished places but throughout Bangladesh.
