Lol ,I mentioned a particular street in Bolton town centre looks similar to a street in Leeds centre, nowt wrong with that, and please lets not have the jealousy and bitterness cliche,I live 20 mins from the great cities of Manchester and Liverpool,I dont really need to visit Leeds any more,my ex was at uni in Hudds and we went to Leeds a lot at weekends ,yeah not bad for shopping. Back to Opal ,I gave it 2/10 from the render ...should have give it 1/10 now after seeing it materialise

Will you lot all grow up. Its all subjective anyway. I too can see the similarities between the main shopping street in Bolton (deansgate), and Leeds Briggate.
Deansgate Bolton (these genuinely were the best photos I could find of the main shopping drag - if anyone can find any better ones? pls post) image hosted on flickr ![]() ![]() image hosted on flickr

It's the manner in which you did it that was offensive, which was wholly deliberate, as you well know.
It's very difficult to take anything you post about Leeds as well intentioned given the fact that one of your first posts on this forum was designed to let all the Leeds forummers know how much better you think Manchester is as a city. From then on the tone has been fairly consistent with you. Are you in competition with Metrolink? |

I think what makes Leeds main shopping street particularly appealing is the very fact that it *is* low rise and on a human scale... with an almost bohemian feel.. reminiscant of the main shopping streets of large towns.
Compare this to say, Manchester's main premier shopping road, Deansgate, with the rest of the shopping enclosed in a big mall image hosted on flickr

I wouldn't say Deansgate is the premier shopping road because of its mixed uses and lack of pedestrianisation. It's more likely to be Market Street or King Street.

but isnt king street a tiny side street, like king edward street
The reason why its hard to name the premier shopping street in manchester is because it doesnt have one.. its all in a mall

Anyway, The Avenue which is U/C should be good for Manc when it's done! ![]() But yeah, back to Opal, 3/10 - would've gave it 2 but the Red, White and Black colours give it the extra point!

People are way too harsh with this tower, it's a truly wonderful building. It's so faceless and plain, it would be brilliant if they built another 10 or 20 around it, it would be like a futuristic dystopian neighborhood, absolutely amazing. It works well on its own too though, such a huge block, a symbol of barren, emotionless architecture. Excellent.

I have to agree with i_like_concrete and I think Opal Tower is fast becoming a cult tower. I expect it will be on t-shirts when the freshers arrive |
