New highway in the pipeline
Monday October 13, 2008 By SIM LEOI LEOI TheStar

THE Government is studying a proposal for an alternative highway to the Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP), which has now reached full traffic capacity.

Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed said traffic congestion at certain places along the highway such as the Sunway and the Sg Penchala tolls was “now at a very bad stage.”

“The traffic jam at these two tolls are categorised at Level E, which means it is very bad. The proposal for an alternative highway was submitted by Projek Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan. The proposal is being studied by the Economic Planning Unit,” said Zin.

“This alternative highway will give road users more choices and help to reduce congestion along the LDP. That highway has a traffic capacity of 120,000 cars each day.
“In many places, the current traffic volume is up to the brim,” he told reporters after opening the Sepang Pemuda, Wanita and Puteri Umno meetings in Sepang yesterday.

Zin said he had also directed the Malaysian Highway Authority to study the feasibility of such an alternative highway.

“Opening an alternative highway to the LDP will also benefit the hundreds of thousands of people living in residential areas along the highway.

“At the same time, I would also recommend that the LDP concessionaire put more efforts into enhancing its infrastructure and develop ways to reduce congestion,” he said.

However, Zin declined to state the alignment of the highway, adding that details were still being worked out.

In May, the minister had told Dewan Rakyat that the Government was looking into having peak and off-peak toll rates as one of the three options to solve the congestion problem of LDP.

Zin had said then that having lower toll rates for using the highway during off-peak hours would encourage road users to stagger their journeys and thus, reduce traffic jams.

Subsidies for the LDP have cost the Government RM630.54mil since 1999 €” the year the LDP toll rates were reduced from RM1.50 set in the concessionaire agreement to RM1.

On another matter, Zin said the Cabinet had directed the ministry to ensure that all construction projects under the Public Works Department continued according to schedule despite the current global economic crisis.

“Until today, we have not received any report of abandoned construction. However, I have set up a taskforce to monitor the situation. The department has some RM70bil worth of projects under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, which are capable of spinning more economic development in the country,” he said.

Maju Expressway
Opened 13 December 2007

The Kuala Lumpur-Putrajaya Expressway (KLPE) was planned to be a strategic and direct linkage between the commercial centre of Kuala Lumpur to the Federal Administrative centre of Putrajaya. The expressway will eventually be linked to the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) of Cyberjaya and the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) at Sepang, Selangor.

The Kuala Lumpur–Putrajaya Expressway will also serve as a catalyst for development of the southern corridor of Klang Valley.

Speeding on the highway with WiFi
10 November 2008 NEW STRAITS TIMES

KUALA LUMPUR: Motorists on Maju Expressway (MEX), which connects Kuala Lumpur at Kg. Pandan to Putrajaya, now have another reason to stop at the Seri Kembangan rest and service area: free wireless Internet service.

Motorists can now feast on satay while surfing the Internet. They can also just stop there to check their emails before heading to a meeting and have a teh tarik while doing so!

Maju Expressway Sdn Bhd (MESB) recently completed the installation of wireless internet access points at its rest and service areas on MEX.

Riza Selahettin Khuddus, general manager of MESB, said the public are getting more reliant on the Internet to stay connected with friends and family, and most of all to work.

"MEX connects two major destinations to each other. Kuala Lumpur is the commercial and financial hub of Malaysia and Putrajaya is the government's administrative centre. Motorists who ply our routes are people on-the-go doing business in these two areas. With the availability of WiFi, they can keep up to speed with what's going on at work," said Riza.

"The wireless Internet service is part of our programme to ensure that Maju Expressway provides the best for its users."

Maju Expressway Sdn Bhd has been entrusted and given the responsibility by the government to design, construct, operate, maintain and manage the 26-km MEX.

Highway project in Johor to be completed by end-2011
Tuesday November 11, 2008
By ZAZALI MUSA

JOHOR BARU: Malaysian Resources Corp Bhd’s (MRCB) RM1.3bil Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL) highway project in Johor is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011 and operational in early 2012, said chief development officer Shaharizuan Shafiei.

The 15km highway links the Pandan Interchange at the Tebrau Highway to the North-South Expressway and the new Johor Baru Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) complex in Bukit Cagar.

Shaharizuan said preliminary construction works had started since August.

He said the main activity of the project now was land acquisition, which involved 150 lots of properties in a 28.32ha site within the designated development area.

“As of now, we have acquired between 30% and 35% of the total land area and hopefully the land acquisition will finish by June 2009,” Shaharizuan said on Sunday at a company event.

He said the RM228mil compensation to the landowners would be borne by MRCB while the construction cost was estimated at RM670mil.

Shaharizuan said the although cost of the project had been fixed, MRCB would appeal for the contract to be revised “if the cost goes up due to the increase in prices of raw materials and we cannot bear to proceed with the work.”

MRCB has been awarded a 34-year concession period to collect toll at the EDL.

Apart from the EDL project, the firm is also building the RM550mil Permai Psychiatric Hospital in Tampoi for the Health Ministry.

“We are also eyeing more projects especially within Iskandar Malaysia,” said Shaharizuan.
