Hehe, cool. One more proof that you can't just say "well, since the country (whatever country) seceded from another country, it will probably keep the same color". Ukraine seceded from the Soviet Union, but unlike the USSR, which used green color (and Russia still does), Ukraine uses blue.

^ "Kurort", where did they get this German expression?

Hehe, I have to comment this:

Where did Germans, in their turn, get this expression? People have used word Kurort at least for a hundred years, but now some businesses in order to be cool started using English word resort.

P.S. Ukraine, being a much smaller country than Russia and not having a lot of natural resources, nevertheless has better roads

Well, that being a '70s era metric conversion sign, it was probably originally specified the other way around!

Here we go then!

I've filled in the ones I'm sure of outside Europe. A bit of help filling in the rest would be appreciated

Yeah I think there was a big effort in 1975 metric conversion act, but it was voluntary so it sort of died. Only way America will switch is if it's forced to. The EU directive for product labeling would be a good start.

As for the lack of consistency in America, though it appears it is all green, each state controls its own highway system. The trends were set by California and the Northeast which made use of green signs. Other colors are used in specific locations, blue signs state local information like gas stations and the like, brown is often used for information in the vicinity of national parks and forests. Airports like to use blue for everything. But yes green is THE color.

OK:

Salinas: 70 km ÷ 1.609344 = 43.49598... mi = closer to 43 mi
San Francisco: 240 km = 149.129... mi = closer to 149 mi

Actually, more and more often I see food products where metric units are labeled first and the archaic ones are put in parenthesis

Btw, I remember Iraq having blue signs on motorways.
And green in Colombia, a pic is somewhere in this thread, I think.
And another thing: Australia apparently uses green on freeways (motorways, free of charge), but blue (with orange letters, hehe) on tolled motorways; also in this thread, I think.

Good job there Chris, thanks! Not all of the photos are of divided highways/motorways/autobahns eg. Ghana, Mongolia, the 'stans, South Korea, and others seem to have no consensus, eg. India. (Does India have a national policy, or is it down to the states to decide sign design?)

I'll probably put in another couple of colours to show the difference between countries with one-colour systems (eg. USA, Australia) and those with two-colour hierarchies.

^ South Korea is certainly green. I was already thinking about India, but can't remember my conclusions. Oh, and Israel is also strange (green and blue).

Yeah some countries have blue and green, and some countries are only ******* around with their colors. I haven't found pics of the motorway in Cameroon yet, there is one between Douala and Yaoundé.

Darker grey signifies countries with no motorways (Greenland, Iceland etc.). If you can rule out any more of these countries, they can be added to the map.

^ Don't call Greenland "country", now Mr_Denmark will send the mighty Danish army over you.

Btw, Moldova's gotta be building some motorway, in Google Earth you can see some thick line SW of Chişinău.

And Denmark is green, not blue.
