With all this talk of trams, the Creek extension and new projects, I wonder how long it will be before the unknown Jumeirah Hills comes back to life?

This map suggests it has a Creek extension of its own coming from somewhere, which cuts through SZR as well.... .

The Pyramid will comprise offices and a museum which will speak of UAE and the world civilization

By Parag DeulgaonkarPublished Sunday, October 07, 2012

The Pyramids of Egypt will be adorning the Dubai skyline in the next 30 months, if all goes well.

At the cost of Dh120-million, Falconcity of Wonders, the master developer, will be building an 11-storey -high Pyramid, which will house offices and a museum. It expects to complete the monument in 24 to 30 months after it receives clearance from the authorities.

“We are building a ‘small’ Pyramid and we are waiting to get the building permit from Dubai Municipality. The Pyramid will contain offices and a museum which will speak of the UAE and the world civilizations,” Salem Al Moosa, Chairman, Falconcity of Wonders, told ‘Emirates24|7’.

the plan was that the Mohammed Bin Rashid Gardens has a connection to the Dubai Creek and the canal flows through the whole MBR Gardens and then down towards the Jumeirah Hills and back into the Arabian Sea.

Something being stored for the future, no doubt... SZR may yet see another bridge or three built to allow water to flow under it

Does anyone know anything about the so called Burj Abaadi, the moving skyscraper?
I've heard somewhere that it was being built, but can't find any info. Here's one video I found:

Too bad, it would be incredibly freaking cool. The Burj Abaadi actually plays a role in James Rollins's latest novel, "Bloodline". He sets a chunk of the story in Dubai, and just for fun, comes up with his own fantastic manmade wonder to go along with all the others Dubai is famous for- a massive manmade island in deep water, called "Utopia", based on the same engineering principles as the Hibernia oil platform. Burj Abaadi's at the middle of the island, twisting and dancing away. And at the end of the book, Rollins does something cool- in each of his novels, he includes an afterward, where he lists off the real world science and technology that he featured in his story. In the afterward of "Bloodline", he claimed that the Burj Abaadi was being built on the mainland, although that might have been researched and written before current economic conditions killed a lot of proposals in their tracks, given the delay between the actual writing of most books, and the time they hit the shelves.

World's biggest shoe store opens in Dubai

By Shan Li

October 19, 2012, 11:07 a.m.

The world's largest collection of shoes for sale opened Friday in Dubai, a city dotted with luxury malls and high-end boutiques.

Called the Level Shoe District, the store takes up 96,000 square feet of real estate. It's stocked with 15,000 different styles from 250 brands. That's enough footwear for even Carrie Bradshaw-level shopaholics to swoon.

"The whole idea is to create a place for men and women who love shoes, who are passionate about shoes, who are addicted to shoes, who are obsessed about shoes," Patrick Chalhoub, chief executive of Chalhoub Group, the force behind the megastore, told Bloomberg.

More vehicles cause traffic jam

Ahmed Al Majaida / 20 October 2012

The Roads and Traffic Authority has said that one of the reasons for the recent traffic congestion is the increase in the numbers of vehicles on the roads.

Ahmed Bahrozyan, CEO of the Licensing Department of RTA, said there are over 1.07 million vehicles registered in Dubai

“The main cause of the traffic jam could be the increase in the number of vehicles; around 20,000 vehicles have been newly registered in Dubai this year. We cannot suggest that this number is from Dubai only, because many people living in Dubai have their cars registered in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Ajman. But the number, for sure, is more,” he said.

UC Davis West Village inspires plan for Dubai Sustainable City

November 9, 2012

Graphic: Architectural rendering of Dubai Sustainable City, inspired in part by UC Davis West Village.

Another grand architectural rendering from the United Arab Emirates, this one showing Dubai Sustainable City, inspired in part by UC Davis West Village.

Inspired by a visit to the innovative, energy-efficient UC Davis West Village in 2010, a Middle Eastern housing developer is now planning a sustainable city on the outskirts of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

Faris Saeed, chief executive officer of Dubai-based Diamond Developers, was on campus two years ago because of his involvement as a supporter of and donor to the university’s Middle East/South Asia Studies Program. He visited UC Davis West Village — the nation’s largest planned zero net energy community — just about a year ahead of its opening in October 2011.

This week, Saeed visited the campus again, only this time he brought with him other members of Diamond Developers, architectural renderings of Diamond's Dubai Sustainable City — and much more.

Diamond Developers on Friday (Nov. 9) signed an agreement of cooperation with the University of California Board of Regents, on behalf of the Davis campus, to formally collaborate in the areas of applied research and training related to each institution’s sustainable living community.

TDIC to test the Saadiyat waters

Quote:
Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) is considering selling about 30 plots of land in Saadiyat Marina on Saadiyat Island to developers in what would amount to a test for the Abu Dhabi development market.

The master developer, which is working on plans to develop a cultural hub for Abu Dhabi including a Louvre, Guggenheim and Zayed Museum, said yesterday that it was looking at selling plots of land close to the soon-to-open, Rafael Vinoly-designed New York University campus. Speaking at a press event to welcome the first residents to TDIC's newly launched Saadiyat Beach Residences, Ahmed Al Fahim, the executive director of marketing, communications, sales and leasing, said that the plots would be for schemes of about eight storeys high and would be for a mix of student housing, homes and offices aimed at supporting the new university faculty.
TDIC said the plots could be marketed next year at prices of about Dh1,900 (US$517) to Dh2,000 per square foot. It did not disclose how large the plots would be. It added that seven of the freehold plots had already been sold two years ago under a different initiative.
"This year we are concentrating on our developments but we want other developers to build on Saadiyat too," Mr Al Fahim said. "It is not good economically for us to be developing the whole island and it is good for the market to involve other developers. It is a concept but we want to build whatever the university requires."
A TDIC spokesman added that the concept was "still in the study phase" and that "nothing is confirmed". The developer said that it had also sold 50 per cent of the plots of land it is marketing for villa development at its Saadiyat Beach Golf Views scheme.
The news came as TDIC welcomed the first tenants to move in at its Saadiyat Beach Residences scheme on the island. TDIC said the first phase of 285 flats at the scheme was now 30 per cent leased with prices for a one-bedroom flat starting at Dh75,000 a year. A second phase of 210 flats is set to be completed in the first quarter of next year.

Dubai: Two major projects totalling Dh4.5 billion unveiled publicly on Thursday call for a major Dh3 billion facelift for Deira Souq area as well as a Dh1.5 billion suspended canal to link Dubai Creek extension to the Gulf through Jumeirah.
The ambitious plans were announced on the website of His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai who viewed a series of architectural renderings.
On his official website, Shaikh Mohammad posted a video exhibiting aspects of the Dubai Souq makeover including a massive new skyscraper at the bend in Dubai Creek towering over Dubai’s historical heritage areas.
The Deira Creek project calls for six hotels, residential and trade towers, a yachting marina and cargo storage areas.
It was stated that the new raised canal would extend from from the “Khaleej Trading Centre to Jumairah Beach in Dubai, going through Shaikh Zayed road, Al Safa Garden, Al Wasl street over two kilometres long with a cost of over Dh1.5 billion.”

now this is interesting:

Al Habtoor says IPO delayed on scarce investment prospects

Zainab Fattah (Bloomberg) / 27 December 2012

The company will rely on cash from operations to fund projects including a new skyscraper with more than 800 luxury apartments on a canal in Dubai, he said. Construction of the tower will start in late 2013 or early 2014 and is set to be completed two years later. He said a decision hasn’t been made on whether the 800 homes would be rented or sold.
