Stadium upgrade in Phillipi a boon
13 June 2007 Residents of Phillipi township will now be able to watch professional soccer, thanks to relentless efforts by the Western Cape government to upgrade their stadium. The provincial government has started with plans to renovate the Phillipi Stadium in line with requirements of the Premier Soccer League. “There is an existing stadium in Phillipi. “It accommodates 2 000 people but we are going to increase it to 10 000,” said Whitey Jacobs, the province’s MEC for sports and culture. “We are taking out the athletics and cycling tracks. The upgrading of the stadium in Phillipi features high on the 2010 World Cup legacy project. “We hope to go for the tendering process to upgrade the stadium before the end of the month. Our aim is to see professional soccer played in the townships too. “There are many people who are in love with sports in Phillipi, the Cape Flats and other townships in the Western Cape. “People travel long distances to watch professional soccer, that is why we thought it would be a great thing to upgrade the stadium in Phillipi,” said Jacobs. Clive Bailey, Safa Cape Town regional secretary, said they were delighted that the townships will also benefit from the 2010 World Cup through the legacy projects. Phillipi township was founded in the early 1980s during the political power struggles at Crossroads. Fearing for their lives, some of the residents left Crossroads for what is now known as Philippi. The place was once called Snake Park because it was infested by snakes. |

My question is. Will FIFA really be "ok" with sending Christiano Ronaldo and co. into Philippi, I'm talking shacks everywhere you look! It is so not anywhere near Soweto which people still consider a township.
Tender for stadium operator opened The Western Cape Government will on Friday officially open the tender process for long-term operators of the new Philippi Stadium. The stadium is currently being upgraded at a cost of R54 million and the Provincial Government is confident that the upgraded stadium will be an official practice venue for teams participating in the 2010 Fifa World Cup. According to Western Cape Premier Lynne Brown, the upgrading of Philippi Stadium is a very important legacy project that would have a positive impact on the people of Philippi and surrounding areas, both before and long after the 2010 FIFA World Cup. "The community of Philippi lives in one of the most economically depressed areas in the Province. We trust that the spin-offs, such as job creation and skills transfer programmes, will help to boost the living standards of the people in Philippi and surrounding communities," Brown said. The Premier said she was also pleased with progress on the first phase of the upgrade, which is being constructed by a joint venture of WBHO and PHC, a black economic empowerment (BEE) consortium. Currently, 72 locals, including eight women and 30 youth - from informal settlements have been employed. The construction of Phase 1 is expected to be complete on 22 December 2008 and Phase 2 in the middle of 2009. She said the Provincial Government had invested R54m in a poverty-stricken part of Cape Town as a legacy for the 2010 event. "We also hope that the upgrading of the stadium will be as a catalyst for the improvement of the densely populated and very poor informal settlement of Kosovo. We feel this is a win-win situation for the soccer-loving people of Philippi, and for the broader community who deserve decent homes in a convenient location," Brown said. The stadium is close to Philippi Station - the second busiest commuter station after Cape Town Station in the Peninsula - is now being upgraded by Intersite. Provincial Government of the Western Cape and the City of Cape Town has proposed that the Philippi and Athlone Stadia be the Venue Specific Training Sites (VSTS) for Cape Town in 2010. It is expected that the participating teams will use the VSTS as training venues before their matches in Green Point. Furthermore, Philippi has the highest number of registered amateur football clubs anywhere in the country. "Recently the 2010 Organising Committee sent an inspection team to Philippi Stadium and we understand that it will be confirmed as a VSTS for Cape Town. We eagerly await the formal notification," Brown said. She added: "We will invite bids from potential stadium tenants and this weekend we will advertise the exciting opportunity for long term operators of the Philippi Stadium. We are offering a ten-year lease, renewable for a further 10 years, to a tenant who will promote socio-economic development and manage the stadium in an environmentally responsible manner." Brown said the opportunity was a great way for impoverished communities to reap benefits from the 2010 World Cup event and further develop the sport from a grass-roots level. "Our Green Goal team is keen to assist in making this a showpiece for sustainable development. We look forward to welcoming teams from across the world to play in Philippi in 2010, but this will also be a real legacy for our people way beyond 2010. This is just one way of helping our disadvantaged communities to touch the World Cup and develop soccer into the future." VOC |

Well Mo, a memorable visit for any Europian tourist is going to those kind of areas, this guys are used to walking under skyscrapers, so ideally, dont take them to Capetown innercity and spend the whole day there, also go to Khayelisha or somewhere of that nature. Apart of security, to me its not a problem.

The upgrading of Phillipi stadium is well on track. The plans and budget of the stadium are currently being prepared and will be submitted to cabinet for approval to secure the development of a practice venue with a capacity of 10 000 seats.

I thought Atlone was the home ground of Ajax CT? And they're expanding Atlone as well atm...strange? Where will Ajax CT be playing in the future, at this Philipi statium? And what about Santos?

Ajax should just move to Green Point stadium, they might even get better crowds in the new stadium. Ive been playing around with a design for this new 10,000 seat stadium. Got some interesting ideas. |

Any pictures of this stadium yet? And where exactly is it located in Kaapstad? Cool to see Jaap Stam laying the first brick, he's a legend, too bad he plays for Ajax now!
