The Izmit bridge and the approaches will not open in May 2017 never mind May 2016 save in the addled heads of some government propogandists.

End 2017 perhaps is realistic.

When have the pics been taken? If they've recently been taken, I'm quite sure that a 2016 opening is not possible at all! Maybe 2017 like sponge_bob wrote.

They are still weaving the suspension cable from the look of those pics, they were late with the catwalk after the tragedy with the catwalk collapse and suicide of the supervising engineer in the spring.

This is a massive bridge in a major seismic zone, it must be built properly, not in haste!

I'd say the motorway to Bursa, from the south of the bridge, will open in late 2016 or so.

Well if your inside-information is correct, that enlightens much.

Observation.

Turkey always announces unfeasibly short completion dates for major projects. EG This example.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/...h2BFuQBhmd0.97

Where Erdogan as good as announced the Megabridge over the Bosphorus was to be ready by May 2015 because he said so.

Sections of the 'loyal' media then take this sort of nonsense as Gospel because they are very afraid of contradicting the dear leader and getting locked up for disloyalty. Photos on SSC ( see the Bridges forum) are far better indications of genuine progress.

By the end of 2017 you will be able to cross two of the worlds greatest bridges while driving along a massive new motorway from Istanbul to Bursa. That I do believe. The Turkish media, in parts, is almost like a North Korean invention though.

Well,

its hard to keep balance. I have my personal thoughts to Erdogan. And i need much effort not to write.

I have good wishes for turkey (as for all nations) as would be good infrastructure. But a society in peace is not buyable. Some things which might help you can buy, but thats not motorways.

Nevertheless i only like to discuss if opening dates are realistic. Politicans all over the world like to announce good news. But this thing i gently pointed out before.

I will never start praising the "grand AK parti". I want to live in peace with their supporters, which are many, likely here also. One should not forget that this rule brought economic sucess, which the country was missing long time ago. But the situation should be seen realistic, there are not only advantages. I also dont want to oppose the opponents. Its not enough to collect a majority behind you. A nation with inner conflicts can never be an just bad sideeffect.

It must be possible to talk about political aspects, thats human. But it could dig up the basement of this place to let it get dominating. Its hard for me, as i am deeply interested in politics. But there must be other places for this discussion.

All in all i think, a friendly restrained way makes people think themselves more likely than blaming some parti or person (even if true)...

What Turkey is doing in engineering terms is very ambitious and complex, I disagree with some (most) of the announcements on actual completion dates but not on the ambition or the ability of the largely Turkish specialists involved to finish the job. Certainly not on the complexity given the serious seismic factors involved.

When it is all done around 2020 there will be an enormous new airport in Istanbul and an enormous motorway from there to Izmir crossing 2 of the worlds great bridges, only the Millau in France, the belt bridges in Denmark and the Rio in Greece will compare to those 2 bridges anywhere in Europe.

Megaprojects that are about as mega as they get take time.

Otoyol Istanbul-İzmir

First section of Istanbul-İzmir highway to open this month

The 40-kilometer section of the Istanbul-İzmir highway between the Gemlik and Altınova districts in the northwestern provinces of Bursa and Yalova will be inaugurated with a ceremony on Jan. 15.
Full report: http://www.dailysabah.com/money/2016...pen-this-month

edit: does anyone know which number this motorway will get? Turkish Wikipedia uses both O-5 and O-33. The Bursa Bypass is now O-22 apparently.

Horasan, Erzurum
Probably the most inland point in Turkey where a foreign country's name appears on a road sign, 225 km from Gurbulak

O-5 it is. But apparently it did not open to traffic today.

I have finally checked the provided data for new Turkish motorways and expressways under construction :

I think the project must be split as follows according to the latest news (in addition, I've checked on Google Satellite for visible works and measured the section lengths on GS/OSM):

O5: Gebze (O4) – Altinova 12km (2013 to 2016) – projectmap
O5: Altinova – Gemlik 40km (2013 to January 2016) – projectmap
O5: Gemlik – Bursa-North (O33) 27km (2013 to Late 2016) – projectmap
O33: Bursa-West – Saruhanli ~250km (? to ?) – projectmap
O33: Saruhanli – Bornova (O30) 56km (2013 to 2017) – projectmap

According to the news on Milliyet, the bridge is going to be opened for vehicles in March 2016.
However on many websites, some guys from the Project say it's not possible to complete all construction Works before July 2016 as per their work schedules, so this means there will be another delay on Project.

I'm not sure if there's anything u/c b/n Bursa-West and Saruhanli (250km) but there are pics of construction works just east of Izmir: http://en.otoyolas.com.tr/?page_id=9253.

Should I add the 250km section too?
Have construction works for all section been started in 2013? Once, I also read 2010.

I think it's not 95km but including the two feeders it's about 95km. Both are visible on Google Satellite or OSM and on the official map:

O6: west of Odayeri (O?) – Sultanbeyli-East ~60km (2013 to Late 2016) – projectmap
O?: Odayeri (O6) – Mahmutbey (O3) 20km (? to Late 2016) – ? – map
O?: Umraniye (O2) – Kuzey (O6) 14km (? to Late 2016) – ? – map

I think both are not yet u/c. Please keep us up-to-date if there's any info about the beginning of the construction works.

In addition, I couldn't find Kinali on a map. Where is it?

I guess it's O21. Please keep us up-to-date when works begin.

There's an additional expressway project, the Eurasia tunnel:

What's the future road numbering, D100? Have construction works really began in February 2011? Is it still expected to be opened in October?

Land Expropriation may have started between Bursa and Izmir and nothing is under construction until that finishes.

Neither of the 2 missing bits of the north ring around Istanbul have a contractor in place yet.
