World's 4th longest suspension bridge opens in Turkey

A landmark road bridge over the Marmara Sea opened to traffic in Turkey on Thursday.

Osmangazi Bridge, a 2,682-meter long structure, is said to be the fourth-longest suspension bridge in the world and the second longest in Europe.

The $1.3 billion bridge is named after Osman Gazi, the founder and first sultan of the Ottoman Empire.

The bridge aims to drastically cut travel time between Istanbul and the country’s western provinces.

The construction of the quake-resistant bridge began in 2010.

What is the exact route of the Black Sea-Mediterranean Sea highway, Ordu-Sivas-Kahramanmaras-Osmaniye?

Both bridges across Bosphorus have been closed to traffic by Turkish army without official motivation. Apartently there's a serious (political? security?) crisis ongoing.

Is it already known which numbers the new motorways will get? It looks like some 90 kilometers of motorway will open with the new bridge next week.

edit: Turkish Wikipedia speaks of Otoyol 6

Technically it is in Asia not in Europe... Nevertheless - impressive.

Yep, it's officially O6,

This isn't to doubt that it's O6, just that that's not a good citation.

Is the motorway opened for traffic now? (it's not reported here or in the 'Motorway openings around the world' thread)
When has it been opened for traffic and where does the newly opened motorway section begin and end?

I guess it's this segment (~80km) plus this segment (~14km)? Can anyone confirm?
Are all segments O-6 (including the 14km branch)?

The Turkish O6 wikipedia article reports that it's opened for traffic since 26th August but the Turkish bridge wikipedia article reports that it's opened for traffic since 27th August. The English bridge wikipedia article indicates 26th August...

Yildirim said the bridge would open to the public on Saturday (August 27) and Erdogan added it would be toll free until August 31.

With OGS you have a little battery powered transponder behind your windscreen. With HGS you have a passive RFID sticker behind your windscreen.
Billing is also different between the systems, but do not know what the difference is exactly.

Google Earth imagery indicates an interchange for the main route of Otoyol 6 is built near Hüseyinli, which would extend the motorway east, all the way to the Adapazarı area.

Also note that the exit density on the newly opened east-west route (the bridge route) is much lower than on the north-south routes that connect it to O-2/3/4.

It my understanding that from the new Bosphorus Bridge, traffic can choose to drive towards Gebze and then to Bursa via the Izmit Bay Bridge, or continue east, slowly dropping closer to O-4, and eventually meeting it near Adapazarı. And a western extension to Silivri. That would be the 257 km bypass of Istanbul.

HGS directly connected to your bank account,
but OGS has some kind of separate account that you should load some TL.

it was smart card. you had to stop and lean the card on the scanner.

OGS and FGS are working only with radio-frequency transpoders (like Telepass in Italy, Via-T in Spain, Via Verde Portugal etc.)

Turkey announces ' Western Marmara Motorway ' to complete a minimum 3+3 outer ring of Istanbul by 2023

http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/ank...&NewsCatID=345

It will connect to the 4+4 Northern marmara in Kinali and proceed via the Canakalle Bridge over the Dardanelles to (I assume) the Bursa-Izmir motorway at its southern end.

To go round the circle you must cross all 3 of the great bridges.
