any thoughts or comments?

i did hear last year from someone who worked on 'spin doctor' that they had to 'scrap the idea because the local airport wasn't happy and the council aswell'.

A 500 footer is totally possible if its a LIM type. The kind that shoots you out and up rather than the traditional slow incline and up then gravity coaster. The current tallest in the world is the 456 foot Kingda Ka In New Jersey that is a LIM shooter. So adding another 44 feet isn't that big a stretch. That being said, The link isn't an official press release. Its actually a coaster that someone created on a roller coaster tycoon type of game program. its cool looking, and i wish that it would get built, but it wont. Selfishly I do like having the world's record holder for height and speed within driving distance. Anyways from what I know of Blackpool Beach, it doesn't have the room for something like this which requires a very long runway. It would have to level half the park or tear down some residential streets next to the park

FYI the tallest tradional type of coaster are the 318 foot Steel Dragon in japan and 310 foot Millenium Force in Ohio.

Kingda Ka is not a LIM launched coaster. Neither is Top Thrill Dragster. LIM coasters use massive amounts of power to operate. Superman: The Escape at Six Flags Magic Mountain is 418 ft tall and uses LSMs(like LIMs) to launch the ride to 100mph. It uses so much power that they don't operate the ride to go the full 100mph. Kingda Ka and Top Thrill Dragster use a hydraulic launching system to reach those speeds. It was rumored that Blackpool was getting one of these types of coasters and that it would travel outside of the park over the water. This seems very unlikely as these types of rides are maintenence nightmares and have been known to create big problems. It is pretty safe to say that Kingda Ka will remain the tallest coaster for awhile, until the kinks can be worked out of this type of coaster or a completely new launching system is created.
