Ernakulam district, most urbanized in Kerala

With 11 municipalities and a municipal corporation, Ernakulam tops the list of the most urbanised districts in Kerala with 68.07 percent of its residents living in urban areas, according to Census 2011 findings.

Of the total population of 32,79,860 in the coastal district, 22,32,564 live in urban areas, according to the Directorate of Census Operations, Kerala. The rural population in Ernakulam district is 10,47,296.

While the total population of the district had gone up by a mere 5.60 per cent since 2001 (when the previous census was conducted), the urban population has witnessed a spurt of 51.15 per cent. The rural population has dipped by 35.70 per cent.

“The increase in urban population does not necessarily mean that more people are migrating to urban areas. In Kerala, the trend has been of rapid urbanisation over the last decade,” Dr V M Gopala Menon, director of Census Operations, Kerala, said.

Ernakulam district has witnessed the effects of rapid urbanisation over the past decade. Kochi city, for instance, has fast spread its wings westward, to the islands dotting the backwaters, as well as eastwards. Of Ernakulam’s total urban population, 11,33,002 are women and 9.04 per cent of its urban population are children below the age of six. When it comes to percentage of urban population, Ernakulam is followed by Thrissur (67.19 per cent), Kozhikode (67.15 per cent) and Kannur (65.05 per cent). The Census 2011 population enumeration was held in the state last February.

If the Mangalavanam is redesigned on models of Jurong Bird Park, surely Kochi has every major reason to called Singapore of India!!!!

I feel, its far better to redesign the park, as it now lies as mere sanctuary without any human activity. With rising towers nearby, soon it would soon go into mere Poorumboke without much use... If a proper bird park designed, surely it would be another added advantage

As we discussed the business lobbies played its good and bad reasons for the city. Despite of being the most urbanized, we still Cochin Corporation's map in 1960s, when the city of Kochi went upto Angamally and Aroor in South.

Atleast this Govt, which is so much interested in Kochi, will get out the jinx and enlarge the corporation limits as it deserves.

Ferry Service to Start soon between Cochin and Male
A bi-weekly passenger-cum-ferry service between Cochin and Male (Maldives) will start soon. The ferry service is to be run by a private operator but facilities on either port of call would be arranged by the concerned ports.

Request for Proposal (RFP) documents with possible terms and conditions for the service are to be considered and approved by the nodal Ministries of both the countries. Ministry of Shipping, Government of India and the Ministry of Transport and Communication, Government of Male will initiate work on getting all necessary clearances to operationalise the service at an early date.

Pending finalization of the RFP, the two sides will invite Expressions of Interests (EoI) from the interested private parties for starting the ferry service. Shipping Corporation of India under the Ministry of Shipping will assist on the technical side in operationalising the service.

This was agreed upon at the senior official level meeting between India and Maldives to improve bilateral maritime cooperation. The Indian delegation was led by Shri K. Mohandas, Secretary, Shipping and the Maldivian side was led by Mr. Mohamed Latheef, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Communication, Government of Maldives.

The best ferry that surely be an instant hit, would be Cochin-Muscat-Dubai-Bahrain services.

Eariler we had a very good ferry between Cochin-Dubai, which was stopped just because of airlines lobbies. But the government can consider a cruiser services between these two, so that people on holiday mood can enjoy.

Likewise, if properly planned, a can develop a cruise circuit between Kochi-Colombo-Maldives-Lakshadweep on models of Caribbean cruises.

Floating Supermarket, all set to launch

After Alleppey, now Floating Triveni is coming to Kochi also. Consumerfed's brainchild, Triveni is on a mission to bring daily essentials at the same subsidised rates which people get through supplyco and consumerfed shops. It will bring the purchasing power with options to the doorsteps of remote islanders in Kochi.

Everything from ketchup to soap, the islanders can pick from a range of nearly 2,000 items in Triveni's store. The floating Triveni supermarkets will be of great help for the general public living in far off areas deserted by water . People will benefit in getting good quality goods with better or cheaper prices.

The supermarket will cover the waterways near kochi and drop anchor at various locations after consulting locals. The 1,000-square-foot solar-powered vessel, which cost Rs 50 lakh to build, isn't just maintenance free. It's also fitted with an internet facility.

The district's first floating Triveni store that will be inaugurated here on July 23 ,2011. The floating Triveni store is yet another effort by the Kerala State Cooperative Consumers' Federation (Consumerfed) to fight inflation and to make daily essential provisions accessible to the people of the islands.

Though there is no doubt Kochi is the most cosmopolitan city , this report will silence many critics who close their eyes and make childish arguments .

also , Can you believ Maradu is not part of Cochin city ... such anomalies should be corrected . The vague argument put forward by planning commission against metro rails that City is not big enough for Metro etc should be addressed by properly defining the boundaries of city ....
else City stands to loose a lot .

Well, London city is just ONE SQUARE MILE, with a population of some 9500.

What we need is an official administrative unit (Kochi Metro Council? കൊച്ചി വലിയ പട്ടണ കോയ്മ, if you want to fully Malayalify) covering the de-facto city. These "Greater Salary Paying Authority" used to shunt politicians past sell-by date doesn't do anything.

Yes... BELIEVE IT OR NOT, also Lulu mall not in city limits...its in Kalamassery municipality and the our great ICTT (Hardly 2km from Highcourt Junction) project is in Mulavukadu panchayath and LNG, oceanairum etc., are in Elamkunnapuzha Panchayath... But corporation limit in Southwestern direction looks like a long tale to the Alleppey district boundary.

If you look, within another 10 to 20 years, if the corporation limits donot change, surely our corporation will see a massive decline in population, as today most of the city population are moving out of city limits and staying in places like Thrikkakkara, Kakkanad, Panagad, Maradu etc. The next big real estate boom will see at Vvypeen. Sure!!!!

Atleast Govt must wake up. I feel we a group of Kochinites must form an association and start pressurizing MP, MLAs etc... Ofcourse they have their own interests. But atleast some action is always better than nothing
