Around 230 Crore spend alone just for these widening works. Added along with 630 crores of SP-AP development, surely Kochi is flooded with money for development and hope authorities and ground implementing agencies will work out for it without wasting it. And surely the combined efforts of PM's blue eyed boy- KM Chandrasekhar, Defence Minister's left hand- OC, pressure of key allies like Muslim League along with sense of determination, surely will make the project work!!! As said, to begin itself is half the work done!!! Its far better than barking and agitations at Post Offices ![]()

1.I drove thru the renovated 4 lane NH-47 from angamaly to thrissur stretch some days back.Though the new roads look awesome and very smooth to ride on without any potholes,I noticed that a lot of land is wasted as medians(which are indeed way too wide). And i remember seeing the JCBs demolishing a huge number of buildings alongside the old road for acquiring land long back.
Had the medians been narrower, wouldnt we have avoided unnecessary wastage of precious land and saved many houses of the common people? 2.I remember reading somwhere that medians are wide to accomodate the space for the vehicles to wait in U-turn areas. If this is the actual reason,is it not sufficient to acquire that extra land in those areas only. 3.And I also noticed that there arent any such wide medians on the new flyovers at mannuthy, chalakkudy and aluva and hence the roads are 6-laned. 4.I dont understand the big fuss over the 30/45/60 m width of the highways. If we very vaguely approximate the width of the renovated NH-47 stretch, a.2 lanes to each direction-7x2=14m approx. b.median(the very wide one which i mentioned)=4m c.service roads-4x2=8m ----------------------------- Total=26m Where is the remaining width of the road? If it is actually 45m(proposed), isnt it way too wide and way too luxurious for a land-starved state like Kerala? Can anyone enlighten me on these points? |

The 45M ROW is for future option to 6 lane. The bridges are built 6 lane with this in mind. If we decide that there will never be 6 lane expansion, then, 30M ROW is sufficient.
Of course, we are very good in being penny-wise and pound foolish, and the SOP is to build for past decade. |

Also the maintenance of the highways is being stalled by politicians protesting against the collections of tolls. Everyone has issues when they are in Kerala but if suppose they go to Tamil Nadu they are more than happy to pay toll for the road. It is time that we change our mentality in various aspects. |

Just a request , plss keep this thread restricted to discussion on projects.
Pls use General discussion thread for normal discussions. Unnecessarily thread gets cluttered. |

It may be purposefully done to avoid land cost esclation nearby. Earlier when Amrita announced its project, the cost of land around it increased with several land purchases.

Coming soon: Hi-Tech double-decker boats
Hi-tech double-decker boats will soon be flaunted by the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA). Get ready to enjoy a luxurious ride on them across the backwaters of Kochi. GIDA is planning to introduce air-conditioned double-decker boats by December, 2011, to conduct a circular service connecting major islands of the city. This is the first initiative of the GIDA in the water transport sector.
According to the sources, the GIDA will use its own funds for the purchase of boats. The cost for purchasing a boat is estimated at Rs 60 lakh and the administrative sanction for the purchase has already been given. “A tender will be floated soon to identify an agency for the construction of the boat. The Kerala Industrial and Technical Consultancy Organisation (KITCO) will help in preparing the tender. A technical committee will do the scrutiny of the tenders. The committee will consist of experts from the water transport sector,” sources said. The double-decker boats will be the most modern type and navigable even through shallow waters with a depth of 80 cm. The upper deck of the boat will be fully air-conditioned and the authorities expect it will attract more tourists. The pilot service will be launched by December and will connect Ernakulam-Willingdon Island-Mattanchery-Fort Kochi islands. GIDA is also planning to begin ferry services to Bolgatty, Vallarpadam, Mulavukadu, Kadamakkudy and Vypeen. The authority is also planning to construct new boat jetties in areas that lack basic facilities to support the boat services. The Kochi Corporation had announced an ambitious project for the development of water transport network in the city. The civic body is planning to purchase new hi-tech boats under the Jawaharlal Nehru national Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). The plan is to include the purchase of boats under the second phase of JNNURM projects. If both the projects are implemented in a time-bound manner, they will uplift the water transport sector and help solve the travel woes of the islanders. Source : Express Buzz |

CREDAI Kochi Expo Meet
The Kochi chapter of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India(CREDAI), a body of real estate developers representing over 6,000 developers, will organise the CREDAI Kerala Property Show at Marine Drive from July 29 to 31.
CREDAI chairman M V Antony told reporters here that the programme, with CERA as its main sponsor, will showcase 47 builders, seven banks and major home- accessory manufacturers in 87 stalls covering 32,000 sq ft. In addition to these, there will be displays of imported street cleaning machines, the CREDAI Clean City E-toilet and stalls showing the centralised solid waste management system in apartments and gated colonies which are part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity, the CREDAI Clean City Movement. There will also be several competitions for adults and kids like ‘Home interior photo session’ and ‘My dream home painting.’ The shows will be from 10 am to 8 pm. Union Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi will inaugurate the property show at 3 pm on July 29. Around 200 projects in a variety of ambiance will be displayed at the show. Antony said that CREDAI Kochi maintained strict ethical values and integrity in all its practices. With the guidance and support of CREDAI, it formulates transparent guidelines and polices for its members. CREDAI has adopted a corporate approach to meet the growing demands of home buyers and provided a transparent and ethical platform for both the resident and NRI customers. It will be the largest property show in Kerala which helps Kochiites to choose their dream homes. As a major initiative of CREDAI’s CSR activities, the Clean City Movement has been initiated to upgrade the civic amenities in Kochi. The initiative has attracted prestigious awards and accolades from the state government, including the award for the best environment programme and the technology and hygiene maintenance programme. http://ibnlive.in.com/news/credai-ke...15-60-122.html

The Kochi Corporation Council has withdrawn its resolution regarding the demolition of the North Railway Overbridge (RoB).
A decision in this regard was taken at a special Council meeting held here on Monday. Withdrawing the earlier resolution that the North RoB can be demolished only after completing the widening of the Thammanam-Pulleppady stretch, the Council decided to give its nod to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to go ahead with the dismantling of the RoB. “The state government, the district administration and the DMRC have promised that they would extend maximum support to the civic body to successfully re-route the traffic once the bridge is demolished. They have also promised that proper steps would be taken to relocate the shops that will be demolished for the North Overbridge project,” Mayor Tony Chammany said. The Mayor said that the Kerala Roads and Bridges Development Corporation would allot the shops constructed beneath the Pulleppady RoB for the relocation of the shops at the North RoB. “Since the construction of shops under the Pulleppady RoB will take more time, temporary rehabilitation will be provided to the shop owners under the RoB at Irumbanam,” he said. The Mayor said that the government had already allotted Rs 25 crore to acquire land for the Thammanam -Pulleppady Road through which the traffic will be diverted once the North RoB is demolished. “We have already conveyed the Council’s anxiety about the traffic chaos that will arise out of the dismantling of the North Overbridge,” the Mayor added. Earlier the Metro Rail authorities and the City Traffic Police officials presented the details of the traffic diversion that will be implemented, once the reconstruction of the North Bridge begins. It has been proposed to divert the vehicles coming from the Palarivattom area to MG Road. Apart from service buses (City buses, Thirukochi and KSRTC ordinary buses), all vehicles will be diverted through new routes as only the side bridges of the RoB will be demolished initially. http://ibnlive.in.com/news/corporati...16-60-122.html
