Corporation to Make Pet Food Out of Chicken Waste
Quote:
With the majority of chicken stalls in the city using open dumping of waste as a common disposal method, the Kochi Corporation is planning to introduce a scientific method for treating the poultry waste.
ExpressBuzz reports that the civic body is looking into the possibilities of setting up a plant exclusively for the treatment of chicken waste. “In other major cities, there are plants that treat chicken and mutton waste to manufacture pet food. We are planning to set up a plant for treating the chicken waste and to make pet food especially for ornamental fishes. The other option is to look into the possibility of making dog biscuit out of the treated chicken waste,” said a top official with the Kochi Corporation.

He said a special team of the Kochi Corporation Health Standing Committee will conduct a detailed study into the prospects of setting up one such plant in the city. “The plan is in the initial stages. We are hopeful that it will materialise as it will ensure regular and systematic collection and proper disposal of poultry waste. The chicken stall owners will also cooperate with us as they are at present striving hard to find a solution to dispose of the chicken waste,” he added. The Corporation will also make it mandatory to set up bio-gas plants attached to every chicken stall in the city.

“We will make it mandatory to procure a licence for setting up chicken stalls. Every chicken stall should install bio-gas plant on its premises and should treat the waste generated at source. The licence of the shops that do not have such units will be cancelled,” he added.

The official said the licence system will be introduced in this financial year itself. “The setting up of bio-gas units will not be a big problem to these stall owners. They do not have to install plants with huge capacity but can opt for ones of smaller size. It will not be much space-consuming too,” he said.

Collector's new Drinking Water Idea

Quote:
With the city facing water woes this summer, the district administration has chalked out an novel initiative to purify the water in granite quarries. A water purifier that uses reverse osmosis process will be installed in abandoned quarries across the district for this project.

District collector P I Sheik Pareeth said a pilot project would be launched in one of the quarries, after which it will be extended to 800 quarries in the district.

"Large quantities of effluent and brackish water accumulates in the pits, formed after mining rocks. By utilizing this water found here effectively, we can solve water scarcity issuesin the district to an extent," he said. The plant that will cost nearly Rs 2 lakh, can purify 40,000 litres of water daily. "At present, the district needs 6 million litres of drinking water daily. We are able to supply about 3 million litres and if the project succeeds, we can solve the water issue," Pareeth said.

Pareeth said the membranes of the purifier will be designed after testing the water quality. in quarries.

"The concerned departments have completed talks with agencies to design a plant and the project is expected to begin within a month," said Pareeth. Once it begins, the district will store purified water will be stored in tanks built near the proposed plant. This will be supplied through tankers and pipes. to different parts of the district.

The collector added that during monsoon, the pits would be used for rain water harvesting.

What is reverse osmosis?

Reverse osmosis is a membrane-technology filtration method that removes many types of large molecules and ions from solutions by applying pressure on the solution. Impure water, pumped from granite quarries, will be forced through a multi-layered membrane to get pure drinking water.
The collector is always fresh with new ideas..... Its just a month over since personal tragedy have struck him, but he is back to business, providing effective leadership and as a visionary guide for Kochi's development. Kudos for this determined attitude.

The project is really novel and wonderful.......

Footpaths to be the new billboards
Quote:
In an attempt to merge the concepts of safe footpaths and economical viability, Kochi Corporation has decided to invite private parties to place their logo-embedded porcelain tiles on the footpaths in lieu of their funding.

The new idea is part of the footpath beautification project of the Corporation under the new budget. The funding for the project will be acquired through public-private-partnership (PPP) mode.
“The footpaths will be laid in a uniform and pedestrianfriendly model.
However, the private contributors will be allowed to place their logo or ad-embedded tiles at regular intervals on the footpath.
This style of advertisement will be followed on all the major roads which witness heavy pedestrian traffic,” said Soumini Jain, chairperson, Works Standing Committee, Kochi Corporation.

However, she added that the roads are yet to be identified.
“Although, the private parties will be allowed to fix their logo-embedded porcelain tiles, the basic design and colour-scheme of the footpath will remain the same.

The permission of the Public Works Department (PWD) will be sought to implement the project along the roads owned by them.
As of now, they have not opposed to the move,” added Soumini.
Meanwhile, the footpaths along the pocket roads will be receiving step-motherly treatment as the Corporation does not have a fixed plan for their construction.

“Since there is no scope for advertisement in the pocket roads, the footpaths there will be constructed using the funds under the divisions concerned or from the plan fund.
Their renovation will be looked-into later,” said Soumini Jain.

An innovative zone for skills and ideas
Quote:
The innovative zone and training centre at the first Startup Village which is to be opened from mid April, will provide a platform to students to exploit their ideas and skills in the telecom sector.
With `100 crore, the Startup Village has chalked out a roadmap to incubate and develop 1000 student startups over the next 10 years.

A three-member team lead by Startup Village CEO Sijo George will moderate the students programme. “We’re employing peerlearning and are organising sessions. However, it’s more of self-learning,” said Sijo.
The team will also encourage students take up MIT and Stanford online classes and get certificates.

An outreach campaign to connect with vibrant students has been planned by signing up with all the engineering colleges in the state.
Around 50 students can be accommodated at a time and it does not have a time schedule.
A laboratory will be set up where students can develop technology and start applications in cutting-edge technology.
Multiple handsets will be provided and machines will be purchased with the fund from the Department of Science and Technology, he said.

Sony Joy, CEO of MobMe, the private partner of the Startup said, “We are planning to organise programmes in all the engineering colleges in the state to create awareness on incubators and ecosystem.” “We have established ourselves after starting as a startup when incubators were just coming up.
When we were in the third year at College of Engineering, we approached Technopark and were the first group to get the incubator facility.

Unlike the past, parents are not averse to entrepreneurship,” he said.
When a group of students want to develop their idea into a product and market it, Startup offers them all the support, he added.
While there are more than 6000 startup in US and China, India has only about 60, he said.

Kochi to be focal point of Kerala Hovercraft Services

Quote:
Kerala is building its water transport infrastructure to squeeze the most out of tourism, its fastest-growing revenue stream. Besides working on a hovercraft traffic network for its backwaters in Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Kochi — the state’s tourism backbone — it is also looking at seaplane connectivity for its main tourist destinations. The state is setting up a Rs 300-crore seaplane company under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. The proposed company would set up terminals alongside water bodies. Meanwhile, the hovercraft company plan is in the draft Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) stage, with Rs 10 lakh earmarked for the project, according to a report by M Sarita Varma in The Financial Express.

“There is no need for runways and land acquisition, and that's the chief attraction of the seaplane project proposal,” AP Anil Kumar, Tourism Minister, Government of Kerala, said. “The seaplanes would need roughly 100 metres’ of space in water bodies to take off and land, depending on the weight and passenger capacity,” Kumar added.

The seaplane service is expected to connect different backwater and lake tourist spots in Kerala. “We will not buy aircraft but will encourage private operators to introduce seaplanes on a trial basis,” said an official of Infrastructure Kerala (Inkel), a PPP company set up to improve infrastructure in the state.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) recently issued guidelines for seaplanes and eligibility criteria for seaplane pilots. The DGCA guidelines cover passenger safety norms, emergency evacuation procedures and right of way and navigation on waterbeds. In addition, pilots would have to undergo specialised training to operate seaplanes. “The seaplanes would be guided by air traffic controllers and DGCA norms, while the vehicles would be operated by the private sector,” stated a recent Inkel feasibility study.

The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation is in touch with Bangalore-based aerospace firms that are evaluating the scope of operating seaplanes in Kerala. “A Kerala government firm has booked six seaplanes made in our plant,” said a Taneja Aerospace and Aviation official.

We expect to develop Kochi into the nerve centre of a hovercraft network that connects major tourist locations like Kumarakom, Varkala, Kovalam and Kozhikode. It would be a more scenic and faster travel option,” said B Bhadra, Deputy Mayor, Kochi. This would mean modernisation of boat jetties and more high-speed boats for local passengers and tourist services. Kerala Tourism is also setting up a Rs15-crore Tourism Board to anchor all these linkages.

Ernakulam-Kakkanad boat service by year-end

KOCHI: The district administration is gearing up to start the Ernakulam-Kakkanad boat service by the end of the year. The service from Marine Drive would help reduce the hassles of commuters travelling to and from Kakkanad, district collector P I Sheik Pareeth said on Thursday.
Pareeth said the district administration had submitted the project report for administrative approval.
"The project report prepared by Kitco has been submitted to the state-level committee for approval and we expect to get sanction by the end of April. The government has given assurance that the project will be included in this year's plan fund," he said.
"Once it gets final approval, the Rs 12-crore waterway project will be implemented with the help of the irrigation department. We are currently planning to utilize the river management funds. For this, we need administrative sanction from the state government," Pareeth said.
According to the proposed plan, the boat will start from the boat jetty at Marine Drive and navigate through Chambakkara canal and Kadambrayar lake before ending the journey near the proposed SmartCity site and Infopark. Once implemented, it will become a pollution-free mode of transport, available at a reasonable rate.
The Ernakulam-Kakkanad boat service has been started by the district administration as part of the Ernakulam-Nedumbassery waterway. Ten years ago, the authorities had introduced a boat service on the same route on a trial basis, but later withdrew it. Once the project takes off, the authorities are planning to revive the old boat jetties on the route.
"Since many agencies including GIDA ( Goshree Island Development Authority) and Kochi corporation are planning to introduce boat services, it will be easy for us to start and run this service. A
A project to connect all canals in the city through waterway is also on the anvil," the collector said.

Central Institute of Fisheries and Technology (CIFT) business incubation centre inaugurated
Quote:
The Central Institute of Fisheries and Technology (CIFT) inaugurated a 5,000-square metre business incubation centre at their premises in Kochi. The centre was inaugurated by Dr S Ayyappan, Secretary, Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR).

The business incubation centre will nurture the development of technology-based and knowledge-driven agri-business ventures. The centre will help ventures during the start-up period (2-3 years) by providing an integrated package of technology, work space, shared office services, access to specialised equipment and pilot plant.

Value-added services such as management assistance, market research, business planning, access to seed capital, technical assistance, training, accreditation and networking support would also be provided, a press release issued here said.

INDEPENDENT OPERATIONS

The primary goal of the centre is to produce successful businesses that are able to operate independently. The incubation centre can accommodate nine ventures at a time.

Dr Ayyappan said, “Innovation and integration of available technologies is the need of the hour for which agri-incubator centre like the one at CIFT, Cochin should lead the country. Forty technologies have already been commercialised in the ICAR system through units set up all over India.”

The business incubator facility at CIFT is a ‘one-stop-shop' for budding entrepreneurs. About 100 such incubators are to be set during the 12th Plan. The ICAR scientists are presently on a ‘farmer first' drive devoting 25 per cent of their time for farmer-friendly technologies. Secondary agriculture is gaining momentum in the ICAR system in which CIFT is a pioneer by introducing the production of chitin and chitosan from prawn shell waste about 30 years back.

Delivering the Presidential address, Dr T K Srinivasa Gopal, CIFT Director said that the Institute had helped in setting up India's first ‘zero-waste' seafood industry at Mr Sulthan Singh's Unit at Karnal in Haryana.

New bridge and walkway on Marine Drive

Quote:
As the part of Marine Drive’s beautification plans, the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) will soon build a new bridge and a walkway on the northern side of the famed city landmark. The new walkway will measure 700 metres in length with a width of 12 mts. The plan also includes the construction of a new restaurant near the proposed bridge. The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 7.5 crore.

“The work of the bridge, restaurant and refreshment centre along with the walkway is progressing well. We hope that the new facilities will be ready by August this year,” said GCDA chairman N Venugopal. He was talking to reporters during an on-site visit with a team including Hibi Eden MLA, Corporation Health Standing Committee chairman T J Vinodh and GCDA officials on Saturday.

The proposed bridge will be in the shape of a Kettuvallam, designed by P S Binoy. The design has been selected from a group of entries submitted at a design competition organised by the Indian Institute of Architects. The walkway will be laid with attractive tiles, ornamental lights along with chairs will give a new look to the walkway. “Along with this, we will float another tender soon to renovate the walkway near the KINCO jetty,” Venugopal added.

A new entry point will be built at the High Court-Goshree bridge near the new Corporation office site. “This will act as another access point to the Marine Drive. We actually want to extend the walkway to the Goshree bridge. But GIDA had already sold their land on the northern tip. However, we will look into the possibilities of further expansion,” the GCDA chairman added.

Land acquisition for Maradu water treatment plant gains momentum
Quote:
State level purchase committee's (SLPC) Monday meeting will take a final decision on land acquisition in four villages of Piravom for the Maradu water treatment plant project.

To implement the project, Kerala Water Authority (KWA) needs about 2.25 hectares of land in six villages for laying pipes.

District collector P I Sheik Pareeth said that revenue department has already started the land acquisition process. "We have fixed the price of land and I hope land owners would voluntarily submit their holdings. If there are any disputes regarding the price of land, we expect to resolve it on Monday," he said.

KWA is implementing the Rs 210 crore drinking water project for West Kochi under the JNNURM scheme. The project that was supposed to be completed by March 2012 was delayed due to many reasons - including the Piravom bypoll. For implementing the project, KWA has to construct a twenty four kilometre-long pipeline connecting the pump house at Piravom and the treatment plant in Kundannoor.

Revenue officials said a total of 1.25 hectares of land must be acquired in four villages for laying pipes and other purposes.

Meanwhile, KWA officials said that they have almost completed the pipe work in other parts of the city. The pipes connecting the treatment plant and various locations of West Kochi are almost ready, said an official. Once implemented, the project will draw water from Muvattupuzha River at Pazhoorkadavu and pump it to the tank in Arakkunnam.

The water that would be channeled to the Maradu treatment plant through pipes, where water will be purified and supplied to Maradu, Kumbalam, Kumbalangi, Chellanam, Edakochi, Fort Kochi, Naval Base, Thevara and port areas. These areas are facing acute water shortage.

Ernakulam Junction Station to wear a traditional look; turned to world class facility
Quote:
In an attempt to give a traditional touch to the Ernakulam Junction Station, Thiruvananthapuram Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Rajesh Agarwal announced that the station will be renovated in the traditional Koothambalam style, on Sunday.

He, along with Khul Bhushan Railway Board Member ( Electrical, Signalling and Telecom), is on a visit to the Ernakulam station. “The station will be turned into a world class facility wearing a traditional look,” said the DRM. The plan is to demolish the old buildings at the station. “Many changes will be made at the entrance to incorporate a feel of Kerala culture for the passengers. The station will have electrical boards displaying information on the arrival and departure of trains. Also, the waiting rooms will be made spacious,” the DRM said.

While, there were discussions on the renovations plans of the Ernakulam station, the officials also discussed the financial issues being faced by the Thiruvanathapuram division. “Many norms have to be finalised before anything can be done. The plan will be put into effect after the Union government sanctions it. Though funds are a big problem, we are working our way towards the approval,” said Rajesh Agarwal, DRM, Thiruvananthapuram Divison. Speaking on the lack of ticket counter clerks at the Ernakulam Junction Station, the DRM said that they have already appointed additional ticket-counting staff at the station. “We will take immediate action if the staff are not reporting for duty,” he added.
