Nizhny Novgorod metro extended over double-deck bridge

05 November 2012

RUSSIA: An extension of the Nizhny Novgorod Metro over a 1.3 km double-deck road and Metro bridge opened to the public on November 5, after the Regional Governor and Mayor attended inauguration ceremonies the previous day.

The city's first Metro line opened on November 20, 1985, serving the main railway station at "Moskovskaya" ("Moscow") and the low-lying districts of the city to the west of the Oka River.

The latest 3.4 km extension of the Avtozavodskaya Line 1 from "Moskovskaya" crosses the river on the 1.3 km bridge, which opened to road traffic on November 4, 2009. The line then runs underground to "Gorkovskaya" ("Maxim Gorky") station, serving the historic city centre situated on a hill on the east bank.

The main contractor was "Mosmetrostroy", which bored twin 1.4 km tunnels using a refurbished Lovat 6.05 m diameter earth pressure balance TBM previously used on the Woolwich Arsenal extension of London's Docklands Light Railway.

The Metro service pattern has been revised with the opening of the extension. Trains on the Avtozavodskaya Line 1 previously reversed at "Moskovskaya", continuing as Sormovskaya Line 2 services. The two branches have now been separated, with cross-platform interchange at "Moskovskaya", which has four platform faces. Trains run every 6 min.

Design work is underway for a continuation of the Avtozavodskaya Line 1 beyond "Gorkovskaya" to "Operny Teatr" ("Opera Theatre") and "Sennaya" ("Hay Square") stations, and for an extension of the Sormovskaya Line 2 to "Strelka" ("Spit") station where a new stadium is planned for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Federal funding is being sought for these extensions, to augment local sources which have funded the current project.

I suppose I should know this, but the pedestrian overpass at Moskovskaya is only necessary if you are going between Burevestnik and Park Kultury, as Burevestnik-Gorkovskaya and Gorkovskaya-Burevestnik is achieved using cross-platform transfer, right?

And one more thing - the map on the Russian wikipedia seems to indicate Gorkovskaya is the only station on the NN Metro accessible to handicapped folks, which basically means all they can do is go to Gorkovskaya and ride around the metro and return to where they boarded.

The problems is that deadends for turnover of trains beyond "Moskovskaya" station are not ready yet (it planned to be completed within few months). That's why Sormovskaya Line still can't operate as separate line. As result, time intervals at Sormovskaya Line became very long (12-15 minutes).

Currently whole network operates by "fork" principle. It's mean that two thirds of trains coming from terminus station "Park Kultury" are run in direction to "Gorkovskaya" station, and one third - to less-important "Burevestnik" station.

So, one platform at "Moskovskaya" station is used for trains which operates in directions to terminus stations "Burevestnik" and "Gorkovskaya". The second platform is used for trains which operates in direction to "Park Kultury" station.

The overpass is necessary for passengers who going from Sormovskaya Line to "Gorkovskaya" station and visa versa. Also, it's possible to do interchange via common vestibules.

Theoretically speaking, the "Operny Teatr" and "Sennaya" should have higher priority because these stations planned to be built near living massives and this opening will make "Gorkovskaya" less overcrowded station. In addition, "Sennaya" will be serve residents of neighboring town Bor who comes in Nizhny Novgorod by newly-opened cableway across Volga River.

However, in reality it's mean that regional authorities will be forced to use own money for this extension. Due to problem with funding, they are no able to extend two lines simultaneously.

In the case with construction of "Volga" and "Strelka" stations, there are big chances to get money from federal government on this extension as part of preparations for World Cup 2018. That's why it was decided that this segment will be built during next stage, and construction of "Operny Teatr" and "Sennaya" planned to be started after 2018.

Well, last month they bought two special devices for lifting of wheelchairs. It located at "Park Kultury" and "Moskovskaya" stations and can be transported to any other station within 10-20 minutes. But speaking generally, Nizhny Novgorod Metro (like any other Russian Metro system) is not very friendly for disabled passengers. In the current conditions, it's more important to spend money on new extensions instead of reequipment of old stations.
