2012 - CULTURAL EVENTS:

In 2012 was changed exposition in the special train "Novonikolayevsk-Novosibirsk" dedicated to the city history. This four-car train was presented on December 28, 2010 on the Dzerzhinskaya Line 2. Each of its four cars is dedicated to the different stage in the history of Novosibirsk. Originally there were four expositions - "Thus began Novosibirsk" (1893-1920), "The weekdays of great constructions" (1920-1940), "The city seared by war" (1941-1945) and "Novosibirsk looking to the future" (1975 - present times). The latter exposition was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Novosibirsk Metro.

On December 30, 2011 the exposition of fourth car ("Novosibirsk looking to the future") was changed. The new theme was history of Novosibirsk Akademgorodok (Academy Town) which located 20 km south of the city center. It is the educational and scientific centre of Siberia. At this exposition was displayed the history of Akademgorodok starting from its foundation on May 18, 1957. There were presented archive photos, photo portraits of the famous Siberian scientists and interesting facts from the history of Akademgorodok. It was founded near Novosibirsk as the Soviet Union's largest scientific center to the east of the Ural Mountains. At that time the Soviet government tried to create ideal living and working conditions for scientists – Akademgorodok is built in the forest bordered by a botanical garden and the Ob reservoir where one bank was turned into an artificial beach and has everything you need to relax (native dwellers call it "the Ob Sea"). The great number of research institutes are situated here. Akademgorodok is also the center of student life – Novosibirsk State University (opened on September 28, 1959) and the university campus with all the university facilities are located at the Pirogov Street. Nowadays, the situation is slowly changing and Akademgorodok is gradually turning into an elite residential area. Perhaps, isn't such a bad thing – such transformations bring the benefits of comfortable living to the great scientific environment and beautiful nature. IT business is very popular here, that's why Akademgorodok is also known as "Silicon Taiga".

There are presented large photos of Novosibirsk Academic Symphony Orchestra at the train windows: the photo of orchestra of 1990s under leadership of principal conductor Arnold Kats (1924-2007) and photo of 2010 - under leadership of principal conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius (born 1960).

Also, there was changed exposition of second car ("The weekdays of great constructions"). FURTHER DEVELOPMENT - 2013:

In 2013 city authorities have plans to open second vestibule at the Metro station "Beryozovaya Roshcha". This Metro station was opened on June 25, 2005.

"Beryozovaya Roshcha" ("Birch Grove") is the station on the Dzerzhinskaya Line 2 of the Novosibirsk Metro. It's located near the intersection of the Koshurnikov Street and Dzerzhinsky Avenue, in the Dzerzhinsky District. This Metro station is located near the borders of the Dzerzhinsky District with Tsentralny and Oktyabrsky Districts. In 2005-2010 (i.e. prior to opening of "Zolotaya Niva"), it was the most eastern Metro station in Russia.

The station is named after park of culture "Birch Grove" which located nearby. There is also residential area with same name.

The preparation works for beginning of the second stage of construction of the Line 2 were started in 1990. The construction works were started in 1991. There were plans to open this station in 1993, to the 100th anniversary of the Novosibirsk's foundation. However, its opening was rescheduled many times due to financial problems of 1990s and technical problems with high level of groundwaters. The station was opened on June 25, 2005 with only one (left) tunnel. The second (right) tunnel was put into operation on June 23, 2007 - its construction lasted almost 15 years (1992-2007).

"Beryozovaya Roshcha" is the shallow single-vaulted station (depth - 10 metres). The architects of the station were A. Milovanov and N. Meleshkova. The station is decorated in gray-brown tones. The track walls are faced with ceramogranite. The vault of station is lined with aluminum panels. There were used materials of stainless steel and polished granite in the interior of station as well as materials with using of polymer coating.

Originally there was opened only one (eastern) vestibule with two exits to the both sides of the Koshurnikov Street. Unlike most other stations, the underpass is integrated with ticket hall. On July 15, 2012 there were started works for completion of the construction of western vestibule with three other exits near the Dzerzhinsky Avenue and park "Birch Grove".

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT - 2014-2020:

Well, currently Novosibirsk Metro system operates very good for own size and city population. Its annual passenger traffic is 82.502 mln. rides (third in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg Metros), and in 2011 Novosibirsk Metro operated with little profit. However, the future extension of Novosibirsk Metro system is questionable. Unlike other Russian Metro cities, Siberian capital will no organize large events in near future such as major sport tournaments, World Expos or celebrations dedicated to the jubilee of city's foundation. It's mean that Novosibirsk officials can not rely on financial support from federal authorities in order to improve city infrastructure for hosting of such events. Therefore, Metro construction can be funded only on money from regional budget.

However, currently regional officials are involved in financing of other important project for the city - the construction of automobile bridge across the Ob River. The official name of this bridge is not determined yet. There are plans to name it Olovozavodsky Bridge or Bugrinsky Bridge. When completed, it will be the third automobile bridge across the Ob River in the city of Novosibirsk. For this reason, currently it commonly known as the "Third Bridge".

The construction of this bridge had been planned by Soviet authorities since early 1980s. However, its realization was postponed due to beginning of the construction of Novosibirsk Metro which was more priority for that times. The feasibility study for construction of bridge was ready in 1992, but it was postponed about on 18 years due to great financial problems after Soviet collapse. The construction was started on February 9, 2010 and is expected to continue until late-2014. It will be through arch bridge with total length of 2095.7 m (width - 34.56 m, longest span - 380 m, number of lanes - 3x2).

It's expected that funding of Metro construction will be increased after opening of the "Third Bridge".

"GUSINOBRODSKAYA"

"Gusinobrodskaya" ("Goose Ford") is a future station on the Dzerzhinskaya Line 2 of the Novosibirsk Metro. It will be located near the intersection of the Gusinobrodskoye Highway and Dovator Street, at the border of the Dzerzhinsky and Oktyabrsky Districts. The planned distance between "Zolotaya Niva" and "Gusinobrodskaya" is 2.12 km.

The station is named after the Gusinobrodskoye Highway near which it will be located. The name of the highway is derived from the village of Gusiny Brod (Goose Ford) at the mouth of Izdrevaya River. This highway became to form in 1924. Prior September 16, 2004, it had project name "Dovatora" in the honour of the Dovator Street near which it will be located. This street is named after Lev Dovator (1903-1941) who was a Soviet major-general and a Hero of the Soviet Union (1941). He was born on February 20, 1903 in the settlement of Khotino, Vitebsk Governorate. Dovator came from a family of peasant Jewish origin. At the start of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, he was posted as Chief of Staff of the Red Army's 36th Cavalry Division. He soon became the commander of a cavalry group, and in August-September 1941 this cavalry group executed the most daring raid through the rear areas of the German army in the area of Smolensk. During the Battle of Moscow of 1941-1942, Dovator was the commander of 2nd Guards Cavalry Corps, which fended off the enemy advancement at town of Volokolamsk. He was killed in action on December 19, 1941 near the outskirts of Ruza town, Moscow Region. He was reportedly cut down by machine-gun fire while crawling towards a forward position to get a better look. Dovator was posthumously given the tile Hero of the Soviet Union two days after this.

Metro station with project name "Dovatora" had been planned by Novosibirsk authorities in 1980s. However, its construction was never started due to financial problems in post-Soviet times. On August 10, 2011 it was declared that "Gusinobrodskaya" will be next (14th) Metro station in Novosibirsk. The reason for this choice is active construction of the residential houses in the area of future station. There are plans to start preparatory works in 2013.

According to the new project of 2012, "Gusinobrodskaya" will be shallow single-vaulted station with side platforms and platform screen doors. There will be built ground-level vestibule near the Gusinobrodskoye Highway. The side platforms of the station will be connected with vestibule by four stairways and two elevators for people with reduced mobility.

"VOLOCHAYEVSKAYA"

"Volochayevskaya" ("Volochayevka") is a future station on the Dzerzhinskaya Line 2 of the Novosibirsk Metro. It will be located near the intersection of the Gusinobrodskoye Highway and Volochayevka Street, at the border of the Dzerzhinsky and Oktyabrsky Districts. The planned distance between future Metro stations "Gusinobrodskaya" and "Volochayevskaya" is 1.14 km.

The station is named after the Volochayevka Street near which it will be located. This street is named after the Battle of Volochayevka, the one of the most notable battles of the Russian Civil War of 1917-1922. It occurred on February 5-14, 1922 near Volochayevka station on the Amur Railway (now Jewish Autonomous Oblast), not far from Khabarovsk. The battle was finished with victory of Red Army under leadership of Vasily Blyukher (1889-1938) and retaking of Khabarovsk. The other proposed name of this Metro station is "Molodyozhnaya" ("Youth"), in the honour of Youth Residential Complex "Vostochny" ("Eastern") near which it will be located. "Vostochny" was one of the first youth residential complexes of the USSR. Its construction was started in 1980s, and the first residential house was commissioned in January 1988.

The feasibility study for eastern extension of the Line 2 was ready in 1993. Prior recent times, this project existed only in plans. The works intensified in 2011, after opening of Metro station "Zolotaya Niva". On June 29, 2012 it was declared about plans for construction of this station. According to the new project of 2012, this station is supposed to be built on the 0.8-km long Metro overpass along Gusinobrodskoye Highway (between the future Metro station "Gusinobrodskaya" and Metro depot) at the height of 4.5-5 metres. There are plans to start preparatory works in 2013.

According to the new project of 2012, "Volochayevskaya" will be built above ground. It will be have two side platforms and ground-level vestibule near the Gusinobrodskoye Highway. The side platforms of station will be connected with vestibule by eight escalators and two elevators for people with reduced mobility.

METRO DEPOT "VOLOCHAYEVSKOYE"

Metro depot "Volochayevskoye" is a future Metro depot №2 of the Novosibirsk Metro, at the border of the Dzerzhinsky and Oktyabrsky Districts. It will be located near the future Metro station "Volochayevskaya" and will be serve Dzerzhinskaya Line 2. Currently there located Gusinobrodsky flea market (so-called "barakholka") at the area of future depot.

The construction of the second Metro depot had been planned by Soviet authorities in 1981. Its planned capacity is 45 cars. There will be one lane for car washing and 9 lanes - for repairing works. The construction of this Metro depot is not started yet.

Great update of the Novosibirsk metro! I assume the further development (lines 3 and 4) are - at least for now - pure science-fiction, right. First the second line needs to be extendend and maybe the '1' too.
