New Neva trains only running on Line 3 now? Do we know when they will expand to other lines? Why was this line chosen?

It's sometimes mocked as a "Russian Curitiba", but if real Curitiba is well known for it's articulated/bi-articulated buses used due to lack of technology and funding, but doing an excellent job, the Voronezh is known for abandoning vast tram&trolley network in favor for private small and medium capacity buses.
I never heard Voronezh mocked as a Russian Curitiba. I did hear about calling it the Russian Gaza, but maybe I was listening to too many Sektor Gaza songs.

Yes, "NeVa" train was designed for operation on the Nevsko-Vasileostrovskaya Line 3 (hence the name of this type).

1) There are plans to extend this line in direction to the future football stadium that will host matches of FIFA WC2018;
2) Due to historical reasons, at this line can operate only Metro trains consisting of 6 cars (not 7-car or 8-car trains);
3) The rolling stock that operates at this line is relatively old;
4) The stations of this line are almost exclusively of so-called "Horizontal Lift" type (6 stations of 10);

Yes, there are plans to construct 66 six-car "NeVa" trains to FIFA WC 2018. After 2018, there are plans to launch these trains for operation at the Line 1 and Line 4.

By the way, Arkhangelsk Tram was most northern tram system in the world (64°32′N) during all period of own existance (since June 26, 1916). Before 1916, this record belonged to the tram system in Trondheim, Norway (63°25′N), which was opened on December 2, 1901. Currently this status again belong to Trondheim Tramway.
When are we going to see more of your fantastic tram history Aleksey?!

Hi, historyworks!

First of all, I must apologize to you and other fans of historical materials. I promised to load next part in the spring of this year. Unfortunately, I couldn't do it. Alas, I could not find free time for such work. Last year, I spent my summer vacation for the watching of 2012 Summer Olympics (being sports fan, I could not miss a single day). In the first half of this year, I used a lot of my free time for writing of analytical material about development of Russian Metro systems:
http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showth...31156&page=111

As I expected, the historical material about development of Russian tram systems in the interwar period (1920-1941) turned to be very voluminous and informative. It was peak of development of tram in Russia and former USSR - after WWII, tram started to lose own positions in the favour of bus and trolleybus. That's why it's need to spent more time for me in order to write this material.

So, answering on your question - I plan to complete this material in May-June. I understand - you waiting it so long, but I ask you to wait some more time. Recently I come back to this work. In this sense, coming months are favorable to such work - due to lack of daylight and cool weather, there is little to doing at the open spaces. It's need to wait, but I sure that you will not be disappointed with my future material.

Thank you Aleksey! You're not being paid for it so we don't expect you to work like a slave! Anything we are grateful for when it comes.

I see the photo above of the platform screen doors at Lomonosovskaya. Perhaps it's worth pointing out that platform screen doors, now very popular, were invented in Russia!
