OK, let see. Now the main purpose is to build underpass under the road.

is this the only entrance to Obvodny Kanal?

Passengers will enter through a building while it's being built?

Yes. "Obvodny Kanal" is deep-level station in the central part of St. Petersburg. Therefore, it can be difficult to find site for second entrance. The trade store will be built at the place of two demolished buildings (former movie theater and one 8-floor house).

Not through a building, but in the corner of building. I think the exterior work will be finished before the opening of station, but work inside the building will continue.

This isn't really downtown, though. I wonder what the depth of the station is, since it's right next to a waterway.

Near 60 meters. It's ordinary depth comparing to the other underground stations of St. Petersburg Metro.

Russia has been granted the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Some of the cities that will be hosting soccer games don't have subways (especially Rostov-on-Don, which has a population of more than 1 million and hence would have been in line to get a subway under the Soviet subway system scheme). Some of the cities have been historically closed to foreigners (especially Kaliningrad and Nizhniy Novgorod). This will be a chance for Russia to put its best face to the world and show visitors the interior. For the relatively small city of Saransk (population 304,000), the World Cup will be the most important event in its history.

Here is a map of the host cities:

Out of the host cities that don't currently have metros, the only one with a plan to build one is Rostov. Perhaps this will be the crucial impetus to move the system from the drawing board to the construction phase.

And Sochi, which will also host the 2014 Winter Olympics, is building a light metro.

Yes. Our "favorite" government should finance the construction of Metro in Russia and not relegate this task on the regional government.

Brief information about Metro systems in the Russian hosting cities:
1) Moscow - have own Metro;
2) St. Petersburg - have own Metro;
3) Yekaterinburg - have own Metro;
4) Kazan - have own Metro;
5) Nizhny Novgorod - have own Metro;
6) Samara - have own Metro;
7) Volgograd - have Metrotram (hybrid of Metro and tram systems);
8) Sochi - planned to build urban rail system in 2014, not Light Metro;
9) Rostov-on-Don - have plans on the later future;
10) Yaroslavl - haven't Metro;
11) Krasnodar - haven't Metro;
12) Kaliningrad - haven't Metro;
13) Saransk - haven't Metro.

Therefore, Novosibirsk (Siberian capital) is only Russian Metro city, which will not host World Cup 2018.

what does "urban rail" mean anyway? I thought the Sochi system was the same technology as Butovskaya Liniya v yuzhnoy Moskve.

May be, they had such plans, but crisis forced them to correct it. There will be light train, but it can't be classified as Metro system.
