During the extension of line of Yekaterinburg Metro will be retained possibility of the construction of the deep-level intermediate station "Bazhovskaya" ("Pavel Bazhov"). This station was planned to be open together with two other stations, but to accelerate the work it was decided to extend the line without "Bazhovskaya".

However, it will be built a place for this station. Thus, with the necessary funding it will be possible to continue construction of "Bazhovskaya" after 2011.

ST. PETERSBURG METRO:

BEAUTY OR UGLINESS?

I have repeatedly heard the claim of foreign tourists that the inscriptions in Russian Metros are not duplicated in English. The Government of St. Petersburg wanted to help the foreigners and introduced NIP - New Information Space - at old and new stations. As a result, to the dismay of all the residents of St. Petersburg, all NIP-stations have lost own aesthetics. Now the NIP abbreviation became a symbol of bad taste and ugliness.

Let's see at the NIP at the future station "Obvodny Kanal". Photos of December 14:

InfoSOS column in the center of the station will spoil the whole general view:

English information at the track walls. As we can see, piece of the decorative panel was cut off for the information space:

Let's see at this ugliness in general:

Brrr.... I don't want to see this "pornography" in the Moscow Metro!

The last photo was made in the intermediate hall between escalators and central hall. The glass decorative panel in the end of central hall also will be done according to original project.

Isnt it unnecessary expense to build it so deep? Not to mention inconvenient. What if the escalator breaks?

Of course, it is necessary. St. Petersburg has a great geological difficulties (swamp). Therefore, 57 out of 63 stations were built very deep (40-100 m), under the unstable layer.

The most notorious example occurred in 1995. A section of the tunnel between stations "Ploshchad Muzhestva" and "Lesnaya" of Line 1 collapsed due to flooding and had to be totally rebuilt. As a result, the line was separated into two independent parts, and these money that could be spent on construction of new stations and the extension of the current lines have been spent on the restoration of a collapsed segment. Through service could only be established in June 2004.

The station will be closed. Repair of an escalator hall takes about one year, while restoration of a collapsed segment took 8.5 years.

The only truly secure system is one that is powered off, cast in a block of concrete and sealed in a lead-lined room with armed guards - and even then I have my doubts. Gene Spafford.
