MOSCOW METRO:

VERY BUSY DAY! THE VESTIBULE OF THE STATION "SOKOL" WAS OPENED AFTER RENOVATION!!!

Station "Sokol":

On September 11, 1938 were opened 6 stations of the new line, initially named Gorkovskiy radius. This line connected most busiest transport artery - Leningradskiy Avenue (leads in the direction to Leningrad) with the centre of Moscow. Thus, in the Moscow Metro began to operate 3 separate lines.

Sokol (Russian word for "falcon") is a district of the Northern Administrative Okrug of Moscow. This territory became a part of Moscow in 1917. Earlier, the village of Vsekhsvyatskoye existed on this location.

The name of this district was given after the dacha settlement of Sokol, built in the 1920s. This village just 20 minutes from the centre of Moscow is haven for weary Muscovites, wanting to relax in green space amid surroundings of rustic quiet. Founded in 1921, Sokol garden colony was a unique utopian experiment mapped out by the Soviet architects Nikolay Markovinikov, Vesnin brothers, Alexey Shchusev, I. Kondakov and others. By the original plan, this settlement should be located in the Sokolniki district near Sokolniki Park of Culture and Leisure (therefore it was named Sokol). But later it has been decided to construct the settlement at the territory of the former village of Vsekhsvyatskoye. The building of Sokol was started in 1923 and completed in 1931. Its original denizens were artists, sculptors, and intellectuals. Several of their descendants live here still.

The station "Sokol", named for the district, was opened on September 11, 1938. Designed by the brothers Y. Yakovlev and K. Yakovlev, it features a single row of columns, which flare upward into the arched ceiling, separated by circular coffers. "Sokol" is finished in a variety of materials, including white and gray Koyelga marble (walls), pink Birobidzan marble (walls and foundations of columns), red and gray granite (floor surface), Armenian onyx (mosaics of corridors) and white ceramic tile.

There are two staircases, which are leads in the corridors to the exit, in the central part of the station. In 1952-53 there were built four additional staircases to the platform, but it were demolished in 1994 after one staircase started to fail:

VESTIBULES OF THE STATION "SOKOL"

The two vestibules of this station are located on both sides of Leningradskiy Avenue. Originally station was opened with one southern entrace, designed by the Yakovlev brothers in the style of the first Moscow Metro station's vestibules (like "Sokolniki" or "Kropotkinskaya"). This vestibule consist from the two small pavilions (one for entrace, second - for exit), connected by the glass gallery.

Another entrance was cut in 2003 from the nearby "Metro Market" shopping center:

Second (nothern) vestibule was opened on December 21, 1949 at the opposite site of Lenindgradskiy Avenue. It's two-floor building, designed by the V. Polikarpova and V. Andreev.

An extra exit from the ticket hall to the underpass under Leningradskiy Avenue was opened in the southern end of platform on April 28, 1960:

P.S. Thus, "Sokol" become the second two-vaulted station of the Moscow Metro after "Krasnoselskaya" (1935). The projected passenger volume at these two stations was relatively low. However, in the case of "Sokol" these predictions were not confirmed. In 1938 "Sokol" was the last station of the Gorkovskiy radius and there were no many living houses in this area. After WWII passanger volume at this station was increased. It became the reason for construction of four additional staircases in the central footbridge and the opening of the extra exit to the underpass under Leningradskiy Avenue in the end of platform.

The construction of two-vaulted stations was discontinued. Only the station "Bratislavskaya", opened in 1996, was built by this type.

The northern vestibule of the station "Sokol" was closed in 2008 due to general reconstruction of the nearby Leningradsky Avenue. It was renovated and reopened on December 30, 2010:

KAZAN:

The architect of the station is Azat Mustafin. The station "Kozya Sloboda" is decorated with Hi-tech style. There were opened two exits - near the Energy University and Aq Bars Bank. The third exit planned to be open in January, the fourth - in February.

The depth of the station is 10 metres. The lenght of the new section (from "Kremlyovskaya" to "Kozya Sloboda") is 2250 metres, the longest in Kazan. The total lenght of the Kazan Metro is 11.82 km. Therefore, Kazan Metropoliten ceased to be the shortest in Russia and ahead Yekaterinburg Metro, which has the same number of stations (7), but shorter lenght (9.5 against 11.82 km). During the first three days after opening the trains will be pass new section with testing speed - 20 km/h, but since January 2 it will be increased till 35 km/h.

It's projected that passenger volume in Kazan Metro will increase in three times after the opening of station at other bank, and time intervals between trains must increase till 12 minutes. To solve this problem, will be bought three "Rusich" trains (these are modern trains, which are used now in Moscow Metro). The first train must to arrive in Kazan in January.

ST. PETERSBURG

"Obvodny Kanal" ("Bypass Canal") is deep-level (depth - 61 m) tri-vaulted station of the pylon type. Boris Podolsky and Pavel Malmalayev were architects of this station. The station is decorated in the industrial style. Historically here, at the area near Bypass Canal, was created first industrial cluster in the Russian Empire and was begun Russian capitalism. The station is decorated with glass panels, which depict life of St. Petersburg in late 19th - early 20th century:
