Official production of "Swallow" Aeroexpress train on Desiro platform begins.

Vladimir Yakunin, President of RZD ("Russian Railways"), and Peter Löscher, Chief Executive Officer and President of the Board of "Siemens", have signed the documents which will now enable production of the "Swallow" electric trains and the procurement of components to begin.

On 26 April 2011, an official signing ceremony was held at the "Siemens"’ plant in Krefeld, Germany, where the "Lastochka" ("Swallow") will be built on the Desiro platform. The ceremony was also attended by Peter Ramsauer, Germany’s Minister of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs.

"Russian Railways" will be taking delivery of 54 "Swallow" trains in all from "Siemens". A first contract to supply 38 trains was signed on 17 December 2009, followed up by a second contract on 21 September 2010 to deliver another 16 electric trains whose production will be partially localised in Russia. The first train is expected to arrive in Russia in 2012. "The Swallow is the basis for fundamental changes in the shape of suburban transport services", said the president of "Russian Railways".

In 2014, the "Swallow" will provide passengers services during the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.

The Russian Desiro looks like a cross between the Brit Desiro and the Desiro ML on the Continent.

AERIAL LIFTS IN RUSSIA - MAJOR PROJECTS:

"Doppelmayr" awarded major contract in Sochi:

The world's longest tri-cable installation

January 19, 2011. The Austrian company "Doppelmayr Group" has been awarded the contract for a 3S installation (tri-cable ropeway) in the Russian Olympic location of Sochi. This so-far biggest 3S order for "Doppelmayr" is at the same time the 100th installation of the "Doppelmayr Group" for the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The installation leads from Krasnaya Polyana to the ski-region "Laura" where the Nordic competitions of the Olympic Games will be held in 2014. The start of the construction works is scheduled for May 2011 and the completion of the works as well as the start-up are planned to take place in 2013.

The bottom station of the tri-cable installation is located in the immediate proximity of the train station of Krasnaya Polyana that is still to be built, at a height of 600 meters and leads to the ski-region "Laura" at a height of 1600 meters above sea level. The installation is an important part of the traffic infrastructure for the Winter Olympics 2014 in Sochi. It only takes 11.25 min for the high-performance access lift with 43 cabins to transport up to 3000 people per hour to the competition venues of the Nordic competitions.

With an overall length of 5383 meters this installation is not only the longest tri-cable installation ever built but also the longest continuous movement aerial ropeway worldwide. In the awarding of the contract by the Open Joint-Stock Company "Gazprom Ski Tourism Center", "Doppelmayr" could score with their high professional competence as well as their spectacular references for 3S installations. Regarding the order value, the contractual partners agreed on maintaining silence.

The ground-breaking ceremony on site will be held in May 2011, whereby the first parts are already produced in Wolfurt (Austria) right now. The completion of the building works and the start-up are planned for 2013. In addition to this major project, "Doppelmayr" already has 20 installations on order for Sochi 2014, some of which are already realized and in operation or on the brink of completion.

The tri-cable system

3S installations (3S meaning three cables) are a combination of gondolas and reversible aerial ropeways. 3S installations are detachable aerial ropeways with two track ropes and a haul rope. These systems are characterized by very high wind stability, low energy consumption and the capability to cope with very long rope spans. "Doppelmayr/Garaventa" has already realized several spectacular 3S projects, such as the Peak 2 Peak Gondola in Whistler Mountain (Canada) or the new Gaislachkogl lift in Sölden (Austria).

Fact box 3-S installation "Gazprom":

Contractor: "Doppelmayr Group";
Customer: Open Joint-Stock Company "Gazprom Ski Tourism Center";
Ropeway system: Tri-cable installation;
Overall length: 5383 meters;
Capacity: 3000 passengers per hour and direction;
Speed: 7.5 meters per second;
Travel time: 11.25 min.

Number of towers: 5

LONGEST CURRENTLY OPERATIONAL AERIAL LIFTS:
41.170 kilometers (25.6 miles; built in 1939-1941, decommissioned in 1997, still operational) - Forsby-Köping limestone cableway, Sweden;
13.163 kilometers (8.2 miles; opened in 1989) - Norsjö aerial tramway in Norsjö, Sweden. The world's longest passenger tramway, a section of the former 96 kilometers Kristineberg-Boliden industrial ropeway (built in 1942-1943, decommissioned in 1987);

Next major project: Sochi trusts in "Doppelmayr"

3S installation also transports cars in case of emergency

March 3, 2011. After "Doppelmayr" recently was able to announce the order for a major project in Sochi, a new and even bigger order for the Olympic region was placed now. By order of "Olympstroy" (governmental organization for Sochi 2014), "Doppelmayr" will build a 3S installation with two sections from Krasnaya Polyana to the skiing area "Rosa Khutor" where the alpine competitions of the Winter Olympics 2014 will take place. World novelty and spectacular feature: The installation is designed in such way that it can also transport cars. Furthermore, this installation of superlatives is the most efficient ropeway in the world with a transport capacity of 4500 passengers per hour and direction. The start of the building works is scheduled for 2011 and the completion and start-up are planned to take place in 2013.

After being awarded the contract for the longest 3S installation in the world in Sochi, "Doppelmayr" was able to bring a new project of superlatives for the Olympic region to Wolfurt, Austria. With an hourly capacity of 4500 passengers per direction, this installation built by "Doppelmayr" will be the most efficient ropeway worldwide. The 3S installation will lead from Krasnaya Polyana to the "Rosa Khutor" Olympic Village (first section) and on to the so-called "Rosa Khutor" Finish Zone (second section). In "Rosa Khutor", the alpine competitions of the Olympic Games of Sochi will be held.

Besides its function as access lift to the skiing regions and the Olympic village, the installation is also an integrated and indispensable element of the Olympic transport logistics. In case a road leading to the skiing area or the Olympic village is not passable, the 3S ropeway serves as the "back-up system" the IOC requires. Therefore, the ropeway design allows the transportation of cars and enables switching from passenger to car transport within a short time.

The world's first 3S installation with two sections has an overall length of 3100 meters and overcomes a rise in height of 700 meters within 10 minutes. 53 cabins are provided for the transport of passengers and 25 special carriers are available for the transportation of cars.

In the awarding of the contract by "Olympstroy" (governmental organization for Sochi 2014), "Doppelmayr" convinced with their profound know-how in ropeway technology, their high quality standards, their often proved implementation competence and not least with their worldwide experience with major projects. Regarding the order sum, the contractual partners agreed to maintain silence.

The ground-breaking ceremony on site will be held in 2011. The planning and construction works within the "Doppelmayr Group" have already started. The completion and the start-up of the installation are scheduled for 2013.

Fact box: 3S installation "Olympic Village":

Contractor: "Doppelmayr Group";
Customer: "Olympstroy" (governmental organization for the Winter Olympics Sochi 2014);
Ropeway system: Tricable installation;
Inclined length: 1690 meters (section 1), 1410 meters (section 2);
Capacity: 4500 passengers per hour and direction (both sections);
Travel time: 5.5 minutes (section 1), 4.9 minutes (section 2);
Number of cabins for passengers: 28 for 30 passengers each (section 1), 25 for 30 passengers each (section 2);
Number of carriers for cars: 13 (section 1), 12 (section 2);
Number of towers: 3 (section 1), 3 (section 2).

Few months ago Rail_Serbia asked me:

Are there plans for urban development on left bank of Volga? There is 4 cities with more then 1.000.000 people on Volga river, and all are developed only on one bank of Volga river. Are there plans for urban development on other banks of Volga for those cities? (Nizhny Novgorod, Kazan, Samara, Volgograd)
And I answered:

The areas on the opposite bank of the Volga River does not belong to the territories of Nizhny Novgorod or Kazan and only some territories at the opposite bank of Volga River belong to the Volgograd and Samara.

Bor is an industrial town (population: 75.809 in 2010) in the Nizhny Novgorod Region. Bor and Nizhny Novgorod are connected by a combined auto and rail Borsky bridge built in 1965, and by ferry service.

There are no big settlements at the other bank of Volga River outside the Kazan borders - only dachas (cottages) and nature. This territory connected with Kazan by a bridge and by river transport.

Only riverside at the other bank of Volga River is included into territory of Samara. Beyond this riverside is national park "Samara Bend" and few settlements. This area connected with Samara by a river transport.

There are towns which included into Volgograd agglomeration on the other bank of the Volga River (like Volzhsky, Krasnoslobodsk, Srednyaya Akhtuba, etc.). These towns and Volgograd are connected by a bridges and by river transport.

I was not quite right. I wrote only about the current kinds of transport. However, I did not mention the alternative projects of transportation across the Volga River.

SAMARA

At the end of March 2009 an agreement was signed between the delegation of Samara Region and the Austrian company "Doppelmayr" about construction of cableway across the Volga River. It will link Samara and Rozhdestveno village in the Volga District of Samara Region (5.33 km). Later it planned to be extend to Podzhabny Island (+1.98 km). The total length of planned cableway is 7.31 km.

In the construction of road will be attended by Samara company "SKADO" and the Austrian company "The Doppelmayr Group", has already built about 5000 such installations in the world. It is expected that the cableway will help solve the problem of relationship between the right and the left bank of the Volga. Moreover, this form of transport to be used for both passenger and for cargo delivery (in specially equipped cabins) at night. In addition, the road may be used as an attraction.

For passengers the project developers have chosen the cable car with a 15-seater detachable cabins. When the velocity of the road 6 m/s and the presence of 19 cabins on the line of road capacity is 750 people per hour. According to the project, on the Sokolov street in Samara will be built railway station, which will include the station of embarkation and disembarkation of passengers, offices, shops, restaurants, as well as multi-storey covered parking.

Currently, the company LLC "Ropeway Volga Boat", created specifically for the project, leased land on the right and left banks of the Volga, formalizes land in the waters of the river for the installation of 18 towers and is developing a feasibility study of the project.

Construction is scheduled to start in spring 2012 and to finish in 2014.
