"BOTANICHESKAYA":

"Botanicheskaya" is a southern terminus station of Yekaterinburg Metro near the Shwarts street, Belinsky street, Krestinsky street and Fučík street, in the Chkalovsky District. The station has two vestibules and eight exits: seven - from southern vestibule and one - from northern vestibule (another one is planned).

The station was named for living microdistrict Botanichesky, in which located. Botanichesky is one of the newest microdistricts of the city, which was built up in 1980s-1990s. It's so-called "bedroom area", with the lack of industrial enterprises.

The construction of "Botanicheskaya" station begun on March 27, 2007. On September 5, 2008 was finished construction of the 1.7-km left tunnel between "Chkalovskaya" and "Botanicheskaya" stations. On February 25, 2010 begun the construction of the right tunnel between these stations, which was finished on April 20, 2011. The opening ceremony was held on November 28, 2011 with the participation of Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Previously Russian Presidents took part in the opening ceremony of Moscow Metro stations "Annino" ("Anna's Village"; opened on December 12, 2001) and "Slavyansky Bulvar" ("Slavic Boulevard"; opened on September 7, 2008) as well as in the opening of the first line of Kazan Metro on August 27, 2005. It's interesting that initiator of construction of Metro system in Yekaterinburg (then Sverdlovsk) was Boris Yeltsin, who was born in Sverdlovsk Region and was Head of Sverdlovsk Region in 1976-1985.

The architect of the station was Spartak Ziganshin. "Botanicheskaya" is a shallow (depth - 12 meters) three-vaulted station of column type. The main elements of decoration are regular hexagons, which are associated with honeycombs. The ceiling is decorated in the form of honeycombs, with the fixtures inside them. The columns are faced with metal, the track walls and floor are lined with granite.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT - 2012:

In February-March 2012 they plan to open intermediate station "Chkalovskaya". According to the original plans, "Chkalovskaya" should to be opened in one day with "Botanicheskaya" station. However, its opening was postponed due to problems with delivery of the sections for the mounting of escalators.

"CHKALOVSKAYA":

"Chkalovskaya" ("Valery Chkalov") is a future station of Yekaterinburg Metro, between the "Geologicheskaya" ("Geological") and "Botanicheskaya" ("Botanical") stations. It's located at the intersection of the 8th March street and Shchors street, near the Southern Bus Terminal, in Chkalovsky District. The station will be have one vestibule and four exits.

The station named for Chkalovsky District, in which located. This district was named in the honour of Valery Chkalov (1904-1938) - Russian aircraft test pilot and a Hero of the Soviet Union (1936). Valery Chkalov became a test pilot in the early 1930s. He developed several new figures of aerobatics. In 1936 and 1937, he participated in several ultra long flights, including a 63-hour flight from Moscow, Soviet Union to Vancouver, Washington, United States via the North Pole on an Tupolev ANT-25 plane (June 18–20, 1937), a non-stop distance of 8811 kilometres (5475 miles). This flight pioneered the polar air route from Europe to the American Pacific Coast. Valery Chkalov was killed on December 15, 1938 while piloting a prototype of the Polikarpov I-180 fighter, which crashed during a test flight.

The construction works at the station begun in November 1992. In December 1998 was finished construction of the 2.5-km left tunnel, from "Geologicheskaya" to "Chkalovskaya" stations. In July 1999, construction works were halted after the strike of Metro builders. In June 2003 was started construction of the station itself. The works in 2003-2006 were very slow due to lack of funding. In October 2006 begun construction of the escalator tunnel. On May 30, 2008 was finished construction of the right tunnel between "Geologicheskaya" and "Botanicheskaya" stations. On October 10, 2011, due to the problems with delivery of the sections for the mounting of escalators, it was decided to the open movement at the path "Geologicheskaya"-"Botanicheskaya" without intermediate stop on "Chkalovskaya" station. This segment was launched on November 28, 2011, and the "Chkalovskaya" became "ghost-station" of Yekaterinburg Metro. Currently all facing works are almost completed. The station planned to be opened after mounting of escalators in February-March 2012.

The architect of the station was Spartak Ziganshin. "Chkalovskaya" is a deep-level (depth - 40 meters) single-vaulted station. It will be second deepest Metro station in Yekaterinburg after "Uralskaya" station ("Ural"; depth - 42 meters; opened on December 23, 1992). The main theme of decoration is the famous 63-hour flight of Valery Chkalov and his crew from Moscow, Soviet Union to Vancouver, Washington, United States via the North Pole on an Tupolev ANT-25 plane (June 18–20, 1937). "Chkalovskaya" is single-vaulted station with three floors - passenger hall and two technical floors (above and below the platform). The station made in steel-gray and bluish colours. There is one row of nine mirrored stainless steel columns along the axis of the platform. There are installed fixtures in the niches of the suspended (decorative) ceiling. The sloping vault with big radius look like the aircraft wing. In the end of central hall installed four decorative clocks in the style of on-board instrumentation, which indicating standard time in Moscow, Arkhangelsk, Vancouver and Washington. The track walls are remind fuselage from inside. The original idea of the station are lights in the floor along the safety line, which light up like "running line" during the approach of a train (like at the runway of airport).

Uncompleted escalators. Look at the stairs at right side. According to the present-day standarts, if the length of the underground tunnel between two neighboring stations will be more than 3 km; they must to built emergency exit for evacuation of people from tunnel in case of unexpected situations. When this station will be opened, there will be no necessary in these stairs, because the length of both tunnels ("Geologicheskaya"-"Chkalovskaya" and "Chkalovskaya"-"Botanicheskaya") will be less than 3 km:

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT - 2013 AND LATER:

However, after opening of long-awaited stations in 2011-2012, there will be another long pause in the further Metro extension.

In 2023 Yekaterinburg, which located just only few kilometres east of Euro-Asian border, will be celebrate own 300-anniversary. Before this, Yekaterinburg have some chances to hold FIFA World Cup 2018 matches as well as International Exposition - Expo 2020. There are hope that hosting of these international events will attract investments from the federal budget for the construction of Yekaterinburg Metro (the construction of the last segment was funded from municipal and regional budget). However, according to the latest rumours, Yekaterinburg will not hold FIFA WC matches in 2018.

Line 1 is actually the first line of a planned 3-line network, with all three lines forming a typical Russian triangle in the city centre. But construction of these lines is not very likely in the near future. They plan construction of Line 2, which should to be built between western and eastern parts of the city. The first stage of the construction of Line 2 (so-called "West-East" Line) will be include 4.5 km of tunnels with four stations. It was declared that in 2012 will be spent 50 thousands USD from regional budget for construction of Line 2. However, with such level of annual funding, construction of Line 2 can be finished only after 25 years. Without federal money, it will be useless to start construction of Line 2. Let's consider two possible variants.

1) Pessimistic and most probable.

The federal officials will not fund Metro construction. In this case, the opening of Line 2 can be postponed for many years. Therefore, Yekaterinburg can return to completion of the planned works at the Line 1. In particular, they can return to the works at the intermediate "Bazhovskaya" station.

"BAZHOVSKAYA":

"Bazhovskaya" ("Pavel Bazhov") is a planned station of Yekaterinburg Metro, between the "Geologicheskaya" ("Geological") and "Chkalovskaya" ("Valery Chkalov") stations. It will located at the intersection of the 8th March street and Bolshakov street, in the Leninsky District.

The station named after Pavel Bazhov (his House-Museum located not so far from the station). Pavel Bazhov (1879–1950) was a Russian writer. Bazhov was born in Sysert, a city in the Urals. He is best known for his collection of fairy-tale stories "The Malachite Casket", based on the Urals folklore and published in the Soviet Union in 1939. In 1944, the translation of the collection into English was published in New York and London. Later great Russian composer Sergey Prokofiev created the ballet "The Tale of the Stone Flower" (1948-1953) based on one of the tales. Bazhov was also the author of several books on the Russian Revolution and the Civil War. The former Russian prime-minister Yegor Gaidar was his grandson.

The construction of this station was started in November 1992. It planned to be deep-level three-vaulted station of pylon type. According to the original plans, it should to be opened in 2000. In autumn of 1997 was finished construction of the left tunnel from "Geologicheskaya" to "Bazhovskaya" stations. However, on January 10, 2003 Head of Yekaterinburg decided to stop construction of this station for acceleration of works at the other two stations. "Bazhovskaya" will be deep-level three-vaulted station of pylon type. Its opening will be after 2015.

2) Optimistic and less probable.

The federal officials will give enough money to continue construction. In this case, they will start construction of Line 2. Its first segment will consist of four stations.

Plans for development of Yekaterinburg Metro:
Red line - existing Line 1;
Green line - planned Line 2;
Blue line - planned Line 3:

metropts

The first segment of Line 2 ("Metallurgicheskaya" - "Ploshchad 1905 goda"):

LINE 2:

I) "Metallurgicheskaya" ("Metallurgical") is a future western terminus station on the Line 2 of Yekaterinburg Metro. It will be located at the intersection of the Kraul street and Vikulov street, in the Verkh-Isetsky District. "Metallurgicheskaya" will be shallow three-vaulted station of column type, which will be built with two vestibules and six exits. It named after Verkh-Isetsky Metallurgical Plant (founded in 1726), which located not so far.

II) "Tatishchevskaya" ("Vasily Tatishchev") is a future station on the Line 2 of Yekaterinburg Metro. It will be located near Turner street, Tatishchev street and Melnikov street, in the Verkh-Isetsky District. "Tatishchevskaya" will be shallow three-vaulted station of column type, which will be built with two vestibules and six exits. This station will be have connection with the future line of Yekaterinburg Rapid Tram.

The station was named after Tatishchev street located nearby. The street named in the honour of Vasily Tatishchev (1686-1750) - prominent Russian statesman, and ethnographer, best remembered as the founder of Yekaterinburg, Perm and Tolyatti as well as the author of the first full-scale Russian history.

A male-line descendant of the 9th-century prince Rurik, Vasily Tatischev was born near Pskov on April 29, 1686. Having graduated from the Engineering school in Moscow, he took part in the Great Northern War of 1700-1721 with Sweden. In the service of Peter the Great he gained a prominent post in the Foreign Office, which he used to oppose the policies of the Supreme Privy Council and support Anna's ascension to the Russian throne in 1730.

He was entrusted by Anna with a lucrative office of the management of Ural factories. At that post in 1723 he founded the cities of Perm and Yekaterinburg, which have since grown into the veritable capitals of the Urals. A monuments to him were opened in Yekaterinburg and Tolyatti (both in 1998) as well as in Perm (2003). During the Bashkir War of 1735-1740 he was in command of Siberian operations from the winter of 1736-37 and head of the whole operation from the spring of 1737. Tatischev finished his official career as a Governor of Astrakhan (1741-1744). He died at the Boldino estate near Moscow on July 26, 1750.

RAPID TRAM:

Except Metro construction, city authorities have plans to built the line of Rapid Tram into the newest Akademichesky (Academical) microdistrict in the southern part of the city (yellow line). Currently this is one of largest projects of the residental building in Russia:

Clickable

AKADEMICHESKY MICRODISTRICT:

Location: South-west of Yekaterinburg;
Main investor: "RENOVA Group";
Architects: "Valode and Pistre";
Total area: 1300 hectares;
Floor area: ~ 14.000.000 sq. m;
Population: 300.000 - 350.000;
Total cost: 400 billion rubles ($ 12.5 billion);

The construction of the new Akademichesky microdistrict, in the South of Yekaterinburg, corresponds with the economic revival of this region of Russia. Intended to welcome 350.000 inhabitants in the next 10 years, in 16.000.000 square meters, the microdistrict is developed by "RENOVA", one of the Russian industrial giants under the authority of Russian Federation and Sverdlovsk Region. Situated on a green field site of 1300 hectares, crossed by the Patrushikha River and bordered by two vast wild forests, Akademichesky microdistrict is conceived above all as a place of balance between the natural and the built environment, an occasion for construction control and respect for ecological issues. In this region hard hit by pollution, the layout of the microdistrict is based on an alternation of strips of reconstituted forests (which connect up the existing forests), and on canals which follow the paths of existing irrigation channels. In the centre of this composition, a vast park of 20 hectares constitutes the heart of the microdistrict forming a place for relaxation around which is arranged the business centre, the commercial and cultural equipments and towers of luxury accommodation. In proximity to the big scientific universities, the activity of the microdistrict is essentially turned towards research, in particular medical research. The various residental areas are designed to guarantee a social mix and to create a great diversity of urban spaces of varying density and scale offering a good quality of life. From the transport systems to the infrastructures, all contributes to a total management of energy and environment. The combination of the production of electricity, of the water recycling and waste processing, on an all city scale allows exceptional energetic efficiencies. The judicious distribution infrastructure within districts, trade, schools, etc... encourages pedestrian and bicycle circulation. The creation of a rapid transport system between the city centre of Yekaterinburg and Academical microdistrict, avoids excessive car traffic. The context of entirely private financing requires a great rigour of economic realism where each choice from infrastructure solutions to the selection of urban furniture and architecture, is made by balancing quality and cost including the requirements of very heavy maintenance in this extreme climate (the extremes of temperature between winter and summer varying by 70°C). "Valode and Pistre", for its subsidiary company "VP Cite" is the author of Master Plan, and will coordinate during the realization the interventions of the various intervening architects for the choice of which it will advise the customer. "Valode and Pistre" will intervene for the design of certain emblematic buildings and the realization of a pilot microdistrict.
