IBS is planning two towers in the same campus with 12 and 13 floors. They also seem to have acquired some land near Thonnakkal, about a kilometer from Technocity. I guess it's pretty certain that their focus is on Trivandrum. Btw, welcome to the forum, Kannan.

Along the Pattom-Medical College-Ulloor corridor

Cosmopolitan Hospital. The road widening works could be seen here. This road is being widened to a 21m (70 feet) dual carriageway.

The opposite side of the same road. A luxury hotel project Travancore Inn is coming up near here, bang on Pottakuzhy Junction on the site which was previously owned by Bhageeratha Constructions.(Apologies for the poor pic quality)

Another apartment project by Beacon Builders on the same avenue towards Medical College. Green Heights, 10 floors. They launched a third 9 storied project somewhere around the city, dont know exact location but the ad was in Manorama early this month

Dental College blocks. The new Super Speciality block of Medical College Trivandrum is rising up behind this. Seems to be a mammoth building with a large floor plate. Its already 3-4 floors high. Sorry, couldnt get a snap.

Medical College Entrance and the Golden Jubilee gate. The new Trauma Care Centre would function soon on a 3 storied complex on the left side of the inbound road. It would be connected to the main building via an overpass to the existing Casualty and main blocks.

Deluxe Paywards adjoining the MCH on the Uloor road. Unfortunately the Deluxe is only in the money, not in services.. Land aquisition for road widening along this 3km stretch from Pattom to Ulloor is almost over.

Could be the building outlined in red at the center-left of the image, looks pretty huge. It will also be a high-rise with 10-12 floors, as originally planned. There is another massive building coming up within the SAT campus, also outlined in red. As it is upgraded to the status of an AIIMS, the State's oldest and best Medical College is adding lots of space to its sprawling campus, which would already have at least 2-3 million sq.feet of space.

Thanks for the pix, Scorpio. Nice update about my neighbourhood.

WOW! I hadnt noticed the construction inside the SAT campus. that seems to be bigger than the MCH Super Speciality complex, well, at least in floor plates! Thanks for the areal view Ajay.

Another construction you could notice is the one marked 3. Its the Child Development Clinic, another independent Research Organisation managed by Dr. M.K.C. Nair. It grows 8 floors high. SAT themselves will be building a Super Speciality block in the area marked 6, but it will only be a 4 floor low rise glass clad building. The new Trauma Care Centre is marked 5 and the Super Speciality block would be rising behind it where Ajay has indicated in red(1). The sprawling Sree Chithra Institute is also seen here, marked 4 and also the two Medical College grounds opposite to it. The smaller one is 7 and the larger greener one is marked 8

Guys it will be insane to discuss about TMC along with other illustrious medical and health institutes in the capital. The lift of TMC itself is not working all the time, how can we talk about TMC? And now is big ? from me to the guys who can comment on the subject of this ?.....is there any fund allotted for Infrastructure devlopment of TMC from New Delhi as its upgraded to AIIMS status?

Kannan, AIIMS is just a status as far as Im concerned. I had been a student of this Medical College for 4 yrs and I ve also been to AIIMS. The New Delhi institution is excellent for research and academic purposes but is also plagued by the same problems of Medical College Hospital, Trivandrum. Apart from a state-of-the-art Gastro Enterology Dept, services to patients in AIIMS are not much better than Trivandrum MCH. In fact some of the lifts were not working when i was in AIIMS. I also had big expectations of AIIMS, New Delhi, but its not an institution I would like MCH Trivandrum to turn into.

confused. New delhi wont support for any infrastructure development of MCH? so, AIIMS doesnt add much value to MCH? I love to see if thats not the case. I think some departments will formed to do research and academic purposes, atleast....

- TMC is getting Rs 100 Crores for the upgradation project which will pay for new equipment and training of the staff. The State Government is pumping in the money for the buildings, along with some Central funds.

And TMC is one of the busiest hospitals in Asia, I was reading sometime back, which effectively means one of the busiest in the world. Combined with a boot-strap budget, it means chaos. However, the thousands of patients which use the hospital get better treatment than their brethren in most other States in India - one needs to have visited public hospitals elsewhere to fully appreciate that!

And despite the overcrowding and the overworked facilities, it does have some of the most sophisticated medical facilities in the State. In another year or so, with the commissioning of a slew of projects, things will definitely get better!

@ Kannan, I didnt mean AIIMS Status is of no value. I just meant MCH Trivandrum is as good as the New Delhi institution even now. Dont fret if a couple of lifts are not working, its a Govt. of Kerala institution man! It will be good for academics and researchers if AIIMS status is given to MCH, but I will have reservations about the improvement in patient facilities...May be we could add some more wards and also make it more clean. Usually the condition of MCH Trivandrum is that we have 2300 beds and 4500 patients(Im not joking or exaggerating). Its not surprising because it has to cater to the needs of 5 districts- Tvm, Kollam, Pta and Alappuzha districts of Kerala and Kanyakumari in TN. I hope for heavens sake that AIIMS Status will solve these problems at least to an extent!

Actually there are about 4-5 private medical colleges and at least 10 or more superspecialty hospitals including 3-4 tertiary care facilities in the city. Also, MCH already has almost 3,500 beds and will surely cross the 4000 mark once the new blocks are commissioned.

For A Transhipment hub in India -Vizhinjam(Eco Times- opinion page report 16 Oct 2007)

This column (authored by IIM Bangalore students) in The Economic Times (16October 2007) makes a strong case for Vizhinjam.......

"Transshipment ports have highly specialised infrastructure facilities for handling different types of freight and act as switching points for cargo carried by deep-sea vessels operating on trans-continental trade routes. The ratio of transit cargo handled by these ports is very high, compared to locally bound cargo. Such ports, therefore, need to be adjacent to international shipping lines and possess deep draft to accommodate large vessels.

A hub port levies a transshipment fee per container which varies according to the competitiveness of the port. This is $150 in Colombo and $130 in Dubai and Singapore. India can not only garner a substantial portion of this fee but also save a lot of money if her ships break their bulk at Indian ports. A single container transshipped from Colombo port to Cochin incurs an expense of $1,200. If it was directly landed at Cochin it would cost only $400. Eighty per cent of Indian containers are transshipped at Colombo, Singapore and Dubai, and Indian ships account for 60-70% of Colombo’s traffic

Natural depth and proximity to international shipping lines are the two most important criteria for transshipment hubs. While all major Indian ports like Mumbai, Chennai, Mangalore and Tuticorin have natural depths of 10-14 metres, Vizhinjam (Kerala) has a depth of 20 metres. Being just 10 nautical miles away from international lines, it is also better located than ports like Mumbai and Chennai which are both 480 nautical miles away. Coupled with other advantages like low tidal variation and little littoral drift, Vizhinjam holds the maximum potential to be the next major transshipment hub. Hence investment in the Vizhinjam port should be able to yield very high returns.

Vizhinjam is located approximately 8 km from NH-47 and 16 km from the central railway station of Thiruvananthapuram. A west coast canal has been proposed from Kottappuram to Kollam in south India which can be further extended to Vizhinjam, making use of Vellayani Lake. The nearest electricity substation is 20 kilometres away. So, it is clear that this project requires considerable push from the government, failing which India will lose out on a golden opportunity that is knocking at the door.

This opportunity can be underscored by looking at the shipping volumes for the Asia region. The total transshipment cargo is expected to increase by 80%, 70% and 200% for Colombo, Singapore and Port Klang respectively. With proper planning, Vizhinjam can expect to corner a significant chunk of the shipping volumes forecast to go to Colombo, along with a part of the volumes heading for Singapore and Klang. In addition, India’s current capacity for handling cargo is nearly completely saturated and hence a new port is but a necessity, and Vizhinjam can fill that void extremely well.
With her abundance of natural advantages, this opportunity to capitalise on the ever-increasing transshipment requirements is one opportunity that India should not miss"

Good times ahead for Charachira pond

THE Charachira Pond at Plamood, which has long been left for dead, will soon been resurrected. In a few months, the City Corporation will set in motion a Rs 76-lakh project to revive the age-old pond.

The project includes the construction of a swimming pool, children’s park with a computer kiosk, a tiled walkway around the pond and a protective fencing. Instead of railings, flower troughs will be constructed around the pond to ensure safety of the visitors. A part of the pond will be made into a swimming pool and the remaining part will be used for boating purposes. ‘‘The work will be carried out in four phases and Rs 18 lakh has been allotted for the first phase of the project,’’ said Palayam Rajan, councillor, Nanthancode ward.

‘‘Initial cleaning of the pond, boundary demarcation and the construction of the compound wall and the tiled platform along the Charachira-Plamood side will be done in the first phase of the project,’’ he said. The Corporation is seeking the participation of the Kerala Sports Council and Tourism Department as the project involves a lot of money. ‘‘The Sports Council can make use of the pond for swimming and rowing practice. As the pond covers an area of almost three acres, the Tourism Department can introduce a pedal-boating facility here,’’ the councillor said
