San Diego's first step towards street-car glory

Quote:
Vintage trolley rolling out; 1949 all over again

Starting on Thursday, it will be 1949 all over again.

Tomorrow morning at 11 a.m., the Metropolitan Transit System will take the wraps off its painstakingly and lovingly restored 1949 streetcar, old PCC 529.

1949 also happens to be the year when San Diego abandoned its extensive trolley network in favor of launching a modern bus system.

The kelly green, plum and crème colored Art Deco vehicle which once operated on the streets of San Francisco is one of five that the MTS has in its possession. For six years, volunteers and rail experts have spent more than 3,000 hours and $850,000 to meticulously restore the vintage Trolley.

PCC 529 will operate on weekends and certain holidays starting Aug. 27 on a special downtown circuit called the Silver Line, a clockwise loop starting at the 12th & Imperial Transit Station and running to America Plaza, east on C Street to City College before returning to 12th & Imperial.

The car may look stylishly old but it has been completely retrofitted to conform with modern requirements and technology. The fare, however, will harken back to an earlier time: $2, and $1 for seniors. Cash only.

Am I crazy or have they been running the S70 down the blue line late at night? I thought it wasn't suppose to be running till 2013?

Another step in the right direction!

Our hometown has been making some good decisions lately. The trolley is full of character and runs clockwise? That's a good decision. Pople from the East Village can get downtown quickly and home in style!

Hoping for a stadium next...

Some time ago I started this thread;

SAN DIEGO l Public Transport

Perhaps news about the vintage PCC car should be placed there.

Thank you.

15th and market

apologies if this is somewhere in this thread, but does anyone know what's going up on 15th and Market (between market and G St.) downtown? they kicked the homeless people out so i'm assuming they're going to start to build soon.

Red Tide - Bioluminescent San Diego, 2011

On September 28th, 2011, the "Red Tide" hit San Diego shores. The neon-blue waves are not digitally created or altered from their original form. This video was shot at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, Calif & North Ponto Beach in Carlsbad, Calif.

Beautiful! With a little Coldplay even. One of my favorite experiences is swimming off a boat anchored at night during the red tide. Sailing through biolumenescence is nice too.
Thanks for sharing.

Turner Construction is in charge of the construction work. The same company that managed the construction of Burj Khalifa in Dubai

Here's an SDUT article about the proposals for the park and accompanying sails atop Navy Pier.

Quote:
Skyscraper-sized 'wings' proposed for Navy Pier
Midway aircraft carrier museum proposes $68 million plan with 500-foot-high sail-like structures; critics say views will be blocked

Written by Roger Showley

The Midway aircraft carrier museum proposed the concept as part of a $68 million development on the adjacent Navy Pier, where a five-acre Veterans Park would be built above the existing parking lot, with a permanent home for the San Diego Symphony’s Summer Pops concerts and the wings.
