Based on:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mexican_autopistas

I calculated there are 78 Autopista segments, totaling 6,401 kilometers.

I actually thought the system would be around 8,000 - 9,000 kilometers by now. Mexico does have the potential to grow into the 10,000's (other countries I see capable of this are Brazil, Russia, India and Turkey, they have the population and geographic area to support such a system)

Hello everybody. I'll be posting pics of a trip from the small city of Autlan, Jalisco to the greater Guadalajara metropolitan area. Now this really isn't an autopista/freeway/expressway/whatever, but it's still a highway so I guess this goes here. We're following Federal Highway 80 most of our way. It's a rural 2-lane road that's currently bieng expanded to 4 lanes (though in Mexico, mostly all construction goes REALLY SLOW). Currently only the section between Villa Corona and the intersection with the autopista to Colima is 4 lane and the section from Villa Corona to Cocula is under construction. So we'll see pics of that.

Here's a useful map of our trip. In this post, we'll be starting in Autlan (lower left corner) and ending in Union de Tula)
1

2) We start in Autlan's bypass. To left here is downtown and we're going right, to Guadalajara.

3) The entrance to the city is a 4 lane wide avenue.

4) Leaving the city.

5

6) I love this part. It's a little mountain we go over, but the special thing here are the curve's banks. You can go really fast here despite how sharp some curves are and going down hill is like riding a roller coaster.

7

8) But, the fun is over if you're stuck behind a truck.

9

10) This bridge here was originally a rail bridge in the US. Don't know where it was though, but it was dismantled and reconstructed here as a road crossing. It was originally only one lane wide.

11) For some reason, this next curvy section is comonly called by the locals "El Chorrillo" which is the diminutive form of diarreah. So... "The Diarreah" I guess.

12

13

14) I like this sign. It's diferent. The border has a less angular form for some reason. I've only seen them in this section and there's only a few.

15

16) Take a left here to go into "Union de Tula"

17) Union de Tula's exit.

That's it for today. I will post the next part of our journey when I have time. Any question, I'll try my best to answer it.

We continue with our trip:

1) After Unión de Tula

2)

3)

4)

5) Arriving at Colotitlán

6)

7)

8) After Juchitlán

9)

10) Welcome to Tecolotlán

11) Going through Tecolotlán

12)

13)

14)

15) Welcome to Cocula, the birthplace of Mariachi!

That's it for today!

We continue with our trip.

1)Leaving Cocula, up ahead is the part of the trip that's under construction.

2)Here starts the road work.

3)

4)Gotta love our safety cones. We mexicans believe we should recycle more and use eco-friendly material.

5)

6)After Villa Corona starts the four lane divided highway. I personally hate it. It's really dangerous and shouldn't even be cald an "autopista".

7)Crashing against that crash barrier up ahead looks dangerous

8)

9)A railroad crossing up ahead. No overhead crossing

10)

11)Exit to Acatlan de Juarez

12)FAIL, though I think the highway shouldn't have even been built in between a town with no proper crossing.

13)

14)Exit to Colima via the free route

15)

16)

17)

18)Up ahead is the northern terminus of route 80. We'll go left to Guadalajara and if you right, you'll go towards Colima.

One more post left till we finish this trip up now.
