Ersatz and reeking of desperation to impress. Not ugly so much as not based in any reason other than to attempt to impress. it is what Paris or rome would look like if those places were devoid of history, sense of self and the notion that style is a function of purpose.

it is a 1 at best and that is generous. It's the kitchest place on Earth.

If anyone is offended don't be. i'm simply giving an honest opinion without dressing it up.

Dubai is one Mamajama, I give it a 9.5/10, in two years I'll change my vote to 20/10

No depth, no purpose to it, no real urbanity stretching awyay. Not so much a city as a vanity project. Arguably the most hideous place on Earth. A building site building pointless statements compared to say NY or HK which are organic responses to place and time. It is a grotesquerie not even comparable to great skylines.

***** has certainly become love and hate for me, Tiger. I agree that there is no real urbanity in this. The definition escapes *****. It is, however, an excellent acheivement and too ambitious to dislike completely. You have to admire the will to ( I guess) compete? To actually say what you want to do and do it. Though I feel almost 100% sure the goal will proove unsuccessful given the tense region, and considerable amount of luxury vacation spots elsewhere. What exactly is ***** trying to proove with this insane and awesome construction boom? What will become of it when and if it's goals to be the best and better of in everything ultimately fail? What will become of see-through skyscrapers and man-made islands in a shakey political and geoligical region? Will it continue to boom? Will we eventually see half finished towers and empty buildings? Will it remain a pomo strip or will it indeed flourish as it promises to today? These answers cannot be given today. Maybe it will, maybe it won't. While I am indeed jealous of the boom I am reassured that we here, and you there have already seen this countless times in our own cities and have reason to believe that when one ends another will come again and with no prince's to help fund our construction crazes. Not so much the same for this region and this ****. That is why there is more depth in a **** like ***** and a **** like *** ****. We continue to grow and retain history while one place may fart out a few supertalls it surely does not need we build for both the necessity and luxury. Something a bit more economically feasable. While I feel that way I can't help but feel like a little kid right now with ***** it still does amaze me and while I can find contempt to hold for it at the same time I kinda embrace it. It's wierd how 5 years ago most of us thought this would never happen but boy were we wrong. This place put all our feet in our mouths. It really does deserve the credit for it's promising and quite attractive glass *******. While it lacks more conventional ideas of what urbanity is it should get points for trying to emulate urbanity in practically 3 years. So what if ******* took 120 years to become the real ***** monster it is. If you can do it in 3 or 4 why not. Who cares how fast you burn out. I still say it's a 10 since we are judging skylines here. Can't deny it.

9.5/10 (only HK is a 10)
I don't understan how 113 people can vote 3 or less.... oh come on just look at it, how much effort is being put into this. In a few years time this won't be 10/10 but 20/10

To an extent, I have to agree.. I wouldn't say it was by no means hideous aesthetically, but the idea that a city can be made my money alone I disagree with completely. Dubai seems based on these pictures (and I won't judge harshly because I do not know enough about the place) as a 'showroom' for supertalls and skyscrapers.

Basically, I see it as someone playing a Sim game in a 'sandbox' mode, money is no objective, there are no rules, just build the biggest you can. Sure, it showcases a broad spectrum of architectural marvels but together, its just menacing, It's like a concrete eco-system, with each building fighting for sunlight and smothering the others around it.

There are some areas that look nice, the bridge and waterside on the above pictures is really nice looking, I love some of the architecture there.. I just wish Dubai would have something more awe inspiring that is low rise, this to me looks like any over-developed residential district in the world... It just looks like a nightmare to be amongst, but.. prove me wrong people with images of streetscapes, lively places to be and images capturing the real Dubai.

But still, I just don't get the appeal other than for people who are merely infatuated with size and mass, I much prefer a city skyline to have limits, restrictions and obstacles which in turn produce a much more gentle, organic cityscape.
