From the ground up
Construction of Harley-Davidson museum rumbles on

The construction of Harley-Davidson Inc.'s museum complex just south of downtown Milwaukee is continuing, with the project scheduled for completion in 2008.

Work on the Harley-Davidson museum complex is ongoing on a 20-acre plot just south of downtown Milwaukee. It's scheduled to be finished in 2008.

Harley broke ground in June on the $95 million development, which will include the museum, company archives, a restaurant, cafe, gift shop and special-event space. The complex overlooks the south bank of the Menomonee River, east of the 6th Street Viaduct at W. Canal St.

The 130,000-square-foot museum complex is expected to attract 350,000 visitors annually, and will have 70 full-time jobs. The project also is expected to create 500 construction jobs.

Future buildings on the 20-acre site totaling 100,000 square feet will provide offices for Harley employees. The company does not have a timetable for that phase, and does not know yet how many jobs would be housed in those offices.

The Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce estimates that museum visitors, many of them from outside Milwaukee, will spend $39 million a year on hotel rooms, restaurant meals, bar tabs and other items.

The development's financing includes $7 million in city funds, which will be repaid through the museum complex's property taxes.

See I would expect that hotel proposals would pop up close to the HD museum just like around manpower. In fact, I would think that the museum would create more hotel stays then manpower. Sure, there is 1(?) 3rd ward proposal... but thats not exactly right by it.

Add on the fact that many other companies will pop up in the valley... and I wonder further why no hotels or the city have expressed any interest in a hotel being located nearby.

There is another Harley themed hotel proposal for the area around the Museum.. can't remember the exact site though. I could see a hotel being built in the Miller Park parking lots too if they end up developing part of the lots.

Shaq investing in Central Milwaukee

Shaq shoots for Milwaukee
NBA star's development firm considering city project
The Business Journal of Milwaukee - May 25, 2007
by Rich Kirchen

NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal's real estate development firm is looking at redeveloping one of Milwaukee's central city neighborhoods.

The development would create a mix of commercial and residential uses in one of three Milwaukee central-city neighborhoods recommended by city officials. O'Neal's firm is likely to reach a decision in the next three months, said Rhonda Manuel, economic development marketing manager for the Milwaukee Department of City Development.

Just so you know that photo is probably a month or so old so it has probably progressed a long way from there... It has just been too cold to get out regularly to take pictures!

Aww c'mon Two!! It was nearly 70 a few days ago!! Hehe, I only kid. The photo threads for Midwest cities definitely decline in number during the winter months, no doubt.

Vantagepoint of your picture?

Thank you for this and the Breakwater picture, Twoaday. Is this one taken from a Riverwalk section at Walker's point? The reason I ask is that I was totally unaware of Riverwalk at that location.

Yup that Riverwalk section is just around the MMSD offices. It is kinda of strange spot as there are almost always people fishing!
