I don't understand this. If you lived in NC as you say you have, I'm sure you have experience driving on tons of roads at night without street lights. It's nothing unusual, and definitely not "unsafe." Cars have headlights, after all.

^The last time I drove to Vancouver, I went through Sumas and headed toward the Trans-Canadian Hwy, which got me to the DTES quite easily. The Peace Arch crossing was very congested that day. Driving up through the Fraser Valley is a bit more stop and go, but it's never been a big headache for me. Once you cross the border, it feels like a breeze in comparison.

Ah, this is a city with the 3rd highest municipal density of any major city in NA, in a metro area of 2.2 million, that has a fully grade-separated, high-frequency metro system as large as Boston's, Toronto's or Philly's despite the city being less than 1/2 their size. Yet there are people here on SSC complaining it doesn't have an extensive enough freeway network?
Have I somehow slipped into an alternate universe? |

Amen to that. Lack of freeways is one thing I admire about Vancouver, though there are tradeoffs of course.

Although I think Vancouver was very forward thinking in that they did not route any freeways through downtown unlike most North American cities.

There are expressways in the metro area that are easily accessible to the ports and the airport, they just don't lead downtown.

Well looking at Google Earth it appears that one problem that Vancouver has is that there is no direct connection between the Trans-Canada and BC 99 which forces trucks to use city streets, although it appears that they are trying to fix that problem with the South Fraser Perimeter Road.

Connecting between the two of them would require traversing the suburbs or semi-rural areas along the outskirts rather than going through the city.

The problem with building huge highways like these is that they encourage more use of personal vehicles. Houston, as well as DFW, are quickly going the way of Los Angeles with the highways. And like Los Angeles, they will figure out when its almost too late and much more expensive that extensive, reliable public transportation beats out massive highways anyday!
