Tunnel

According to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin_Port_Tunnel

the longest urban tunnel is in Sweden and the second longest is the Dublin Port Tunnel.

I thought it was opened not long ago, so it's very new.

In Spanish, about the Madrid Calle 30. I think it says studies to new tunnel started 2004, and completed this year. But my Spanish isn't that good.

You are right. It was a promise made by major Gallardon (also known as 'the Pharaoh' here) before winning the local elections in 2003.

80 kilometers of new Metro (53 of them full metro) built in that four years shows how much this man love infraestructures.

Of course that's the main argument used by the opposition to critize his management. He got 55.5% of the votes in 2007 (4% more than 4 years before) so it seems people in Madrid don't mind paying taxes as long as he carries out his promises (something not usual between politicians).

Anyway I don't live there so I can enjoy all this stuff in my several visits without looking at the money it cost.

Hehe . There's been some fuss about the issue, but in the last election he gained even more votes than four years ago. So his strategy appears to work. The last election he builded a 40km Circular Metro line totally underground opened for the elections.

IMHO, the public debt/earnings ratio is reasonable, high, but reasonable, and the property taxes (IBI Impuesto de Bienes Inmuebles) has raised, being before one of the lowest in Spain.

Anyway, it seems the age of big public works in Madrid its coming to an end, the Madrid region population has soared in ten years to 6 m. hab from 5 m. hab., and much of the Metro expansion and highways (the M-30 has not been expanded, but a handfull of new toll highways and one semi-orbital, the M-45, have been build as well in the last 10 years) were indeed neccesary if to prevent the traffic from collapsing.

It's been all very well, but thanks God it's over.

PS: The New City Symbol:

This one is the real thing:

You are lucky. I wish my tax money was used to build some more lanes on our motorways.

I think most "madrileños" (people from Madrid) would change all the public works done in the last years for the quality of life you got up there.

At least me.

Urban Spaghetti!!

Highway junctions near or in big cities are allways kind of different to say the least. Due to lack of space many of these junctions are very compact with lost of viaducts, dive-unders etc and are crammed into the city.
This is a thread about spaghetti you can drive on

Rotterdam, Kleinpolderplein A13-A20:

Genua, A7-Via di Francia(?):

Napoli, SP1-SS7bis:

Rome, Tangenziale Est-Via Tiburtina

Paris, Quai de Berci A4-Peripherique:

Paris, N13-N314:

Berlin, A115avus-A100:

Barcelona, AP B10-AP B20:

Lyon, A7-N6:

Marseille, Bassin de Carenage, A50-Boulevard Charles Nivon:

Feel free to add more of these junctions, as long as they are not built by the book! (no standard cloverleafs, stars, turbines, windmills etc..)
