Detroit probably has the least congestion of any of America's ten or so largest metros.

Yeah, probably because of it's population decline. Similar things are happening in Wallonia in Belgium, unemployment peaks at 30% in certain cities, causing significant fewer commuting traffic.

[QUOTE=spoonman11;14539995]Los Angeles

1947 Proposed

Interesting that this 1947 proposed map isn't too far off from the freeway system that exists in L.A. today. Of course a lot of the names are different...Sepulveda became the San Diego (405), Riverside became the Ventura, San Fernando became the Golden State (5), etc. Leave it to L.A. to become one of the few cities that built, and bettered most of their proposals, and even some that were not proposed such as the Century. That freeway went in on this map just south of the proposed Inglewood Parkway.

I am also wondering if these so-called "Parkways" were proposed as surface streets, or controlled access.

Washington DC freeway system that never came close to being built...now everything just circles around the city instead of going through it

This is how Helsinki inner city motorway network would look like, if the oil crisis hadn't happened. This network was started to build with some interchanges in the eastern part of the city and with a tunnel on a street in the western side, that would have been a ramp. If this network was build, there would be much less traffic jams and problems in the city center. With the oil crisis and protests the project was cancelled.

Blue: never built
Green: planned
Red: under construction
Black: built

I guess the Rotterdam thing is a bit overdone, but one have to keep in mind that besides motorways, most other roads cannot handle much traffic because they're going through towns and villages, across dikes and miniroundabouts all the time.

That's why the Dutch policymakers need to make a decision between widening the motorways massively, or improving the existing surface and non-motorway arterials hugely.
I think the latter may eventually cost more because it are much more kilometers of road that needs to be widened or improved. Virtually all provincial roads needs to be widened, realigned and rerouted.

Helsinki ones with explanation:

Red: continuation of Länsiväylä (Western motorway/Road 51) towards city center. The southernmost branch of it was build in the 1960´s as a future interchange, and it still exists. It consists of a tunnel on Mallaskatu street.

Blue: Center by-pass. Was planned to be build in the 1970´s. Was never built but was again planned as the Central tunnel. It will not be built, because of opposition of the Greens, the Lefts, the Agrarian party and the Social Democrats in 2008. Still, a little chance of its building exists.

Black: The central motorway towards Turku, Tampere, Tuusula and Lahti. Had been planned since the 1950´s by famous architects, inclunding Alvar Aalto. It consisted of a 4+4-lane motorway that wuld lay on the main rail road of Helsinki. Also known as the Freedom avenue. Never built.

Green: A planned new branch of Tuusula motorway. It would run through Pasila near the railway, but i will not be built until 2020´s.

Yellow: Eastern by-pass. Planned motorway from Lahti motorway through eastern parts of the city and with an interchange with Itäväylä (Eastern motorway/Road 170), and continuing as a motorway through Sörnäinen with interchanges built in the sea. Then it would had an interchange with the Central by-pass and it would have continued through historical city center to Esplanadi, where it would had sumerged into a tunnel towards southern harbour and city center.

Brown: Hakamäentie/Pasila motorway/Road 100. It consists of a motorway-like road connecting Turku, Tampere, Tuusula and Lahti motorways. The brown road is that part of the Pasila motorway that is under construction. It will be completed in 2009.

Light blue: Left: tunnel from Turku motorway to Tampere motorway. Right: tunnel from Pasila to Lahti motorway with a tunnel branch towards city center. Will be built in the 2020´s.
