Metropolitan Road Viaducts

Just to complement the tunnel thread:

What cities have major highway networks carried above street level,

I know Bangkok has a hell of a lot of Motorways which stretch accross the entire city on bridges, including the junctions.

In the UK I think Birmingham is the king of elevated motorways, tho I'm not absolutely sure of that!

The US likely has a ton, Japan also.

Toronto has one and many people want it torn down, or buried

Hey Dr Joe, ever heard of The Big Dig in Boston, Mass. USA? Such a solution is possible in Toronto, but I drove on this Gardiner Highway (Am I Right?) and as a tourist I said often WOW! Entering a real big city..... Please, don`t bury this highway, it`s unique.

I'm pretty sure that London has got loads more than Birmingham, but Glasgow's M8 must be the king. Manchester also has its Mancunian Way aka: Highway in the sky.

Preston has got one as part of one of the main routes going into the city centre

Not the greatest of pics I know cos I wasnt actually trying to take pics of the flyover itself. I'll try and get some better ones next time I go over.

With the gardinier, I think that as long as there is development between the Lakeshore and the MINT cluster, it will not be an eyesore

I'm glad that Melbourne's new freeways are built into a cutting. Although they do go overboard with the landscaping sometimes. But things like the cheese stick and the sound tube are used just to stop you from looking further into the houssing commission blocks and the industrial areas.

What would be cool is if cities did something like the job on a section of railway viaduct here and floodlit the structure in a blue colour. Stops them from looking ugly at least during night.

One is build over a river (Sihlhochstrasse), the long way... the riverside turned from beutefull into ugly.
The Hardbrücke over a beutiful alley. It was industrial district but the industry went away and now people live and work there. It's the place where they are.

There was a poll not so long ago "wich building do you want to be removed/destroyed. The Hardbrücke came top.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Campbell N-e-w-m-a-n came out with a big plan, TransApex in the election campaign last year to build five road tunnels under Brisbane.

The North-South Bypass Tunnel(5.4Km--Under Construction)
The Airport Link(6Km--Initial Planning)
Northern Link(4.7Km--No Progress)
East-West Link(6.4Km--Unlikely to be built)
Total: 22.5Km

Brisbane's only existing significant tunnel: Inner City By-Pass(400m)

That all looks pretty impressive. Good to see Brisbane investing in some seriously good infrastructure.
