I don't think that funneling traffic through the city centre is a good idea, so I think that motorways/ highways should end at the outskirts of a city, where they would distribute their traffic on a few trunk roads. A well designed obital motorway/freeway would serve as a city bypass.
In most cases where motorways go right into the city centre too much traffic is "dumped" onto an under capacity trunk road system which in combination with too closely placed on/off ramps causes massive congestion, which in turn makes the highway itself less feasable. So imho honest opinion there is no sense in building them right into the city centre in the firstplace, beacuse you will be stuck in traffic anyway.

Kinda old topic, but whatever...

A grid-network is better.

In the first place, you have more alternatives to travel through a city, because there are always some freeways nearby.
In the second place, beltways are mostly longer, so you have to use more fuel. For one car, that's not a problem, but when you are talking about 100.000 vehicles each day, it's another problem. Environmental-reasons are quite "hot", here in Europe.

But a grid network is mostly impossible in those old-setup in European cities, unless you want to rebuild a city. In Europe, there are almost no cities or urban areas with a grid network. I think the Rhine-Ruhr area in Western Germany is the only one, who has one of a larger size. Most European cities have beltways or bypasses, or worse: non of them.

So beltways arent favourable for environmental-groups, because they mostly go through "nature" (that is often a point of discussion).
But a grid-network mostly goes to (heavy) urbanized areas.

It's the question about where do you want the traffic; inside populated areas, or outside them?

City Motorways.

Post pictures of motorways running through cities. Your cities, if applicable.

Really messy signs in Austria...

I must say, some German Autobahnen through Hamburg, Ruhr, Berlin, Frankfurt are quite impressive.

And ofcourse, we have our motorways around Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Well, this is the A28 running through my hometown.

One of the Netherlands most busy motorway with only 2x2 real lanes. That extra lane on the left is VERY narrow, and closed often, wouldn't count that a real lane...

True, but it can hardly be better, because of Vienna's position. You have to list all those cities, such as Prague, Brno, Bratislava, Budapest, Graz and Linz, then don't forget about all those country codes (CZ, SK, H, SLO, I, D) and you have to write parts of Vienna of course (like center definitely) plus road numbers.

Anyway, here are pictures of the Ljubljana Motorway Ring (Slovenia):

Unfortunately true. I never really noticed, as I hardly ever need to look at the signs but I feel that they spoiled me a little. I sometimes get lost in other countries (Italy mostly) because I expect more information. So while it might be helpful for visitors, it's not beneficial for Austrians abroad who easily get confused.

Wellington Urban Motorway. This is looking to the north at the southern end of the motorway close to the CBD about 2km north of where it ends.

This is your first post in a year and a half? Ok, here you go: go to some picture-uploading site, like Imageshack and choose firstly, if you wanna upload a file or url (if it's file, continue with "Browse..."), when you're done with this, click "host it!", and then just copy one of those hotlinks (I choose "Hotlink for forums (1)") and paste it in your post on SSC. That's all.
