Crazy Monster, the tree clearing I mentioned was on the Brook St West Tower site, not King Eddy's site, which is across the other side of the road.

Anyway, I decided to call it 'under construction' as there is definitely construction activity going on there, even if there is no work as yet on the permanent building. It's always difficult to judge when construction actually starts (or when it finishes) but site clearance is normally the first activity that leads directly on to the actual building. |

No objections to the under construction status here! Beetham West is going up...although they still have to go down...

I love the way Beetham are ruthlessly efficient when it comes to putting up their towers, and still managing to do a a quality job of it. IMO, this tower should be the best of the Beethams - despite not being as tall as Beetham Manc, I think it looks much better

I beg to differ. ISA's designs always seem to be a cut above.
Whilst what Aedas have produced for the West Tower site might be a massive improvement on their first effort at Old Hall St, it still doesnt display anything like the subtle flair and ingenuity of the various ISA-designed tower proposals around the country be it Beetham Manchester, HCT, Criterion or (sigh) Brunswick Quay. Plus the cladding doesn't look to be the best. It is skillfully rendered though (put it that way)... whilst no render could really convey the impact of Beetham's Manchester tower owing to its ultra flat facades. Saw lots of diggers milling around the BWest site as I drove past today, they're working on site clearance pretty quickly now. Noticed the crane up at Malmaison too.

Alex tower doesn't seem to be moving at all but I'm sure that is just down to the complexity of the piling operation. I can't imagine that a piling rig, crane and excavator would be left on site doing nothing and incurring huge hire fees.
What seems to be happening now on the West Tower site is that a piling platform is being created. If piling starts in the next week or so, I expect that the earliest we could see a crane there is about early to mid-October. Some while back, someone pointed out that the site of West Tower is just on the river terrace slope which is a northern extension of the high cliff beneath Grafton Street. This may mean that foundation work in this area will be more complicated than for similar developments in the area. We should also know soon if that sub-station in front of the Unisys block will have to be demolished to allow West Tower to be built. It seems extremely close to the site of the tower. |
