34 caissons???

Not to burst anyone's bubble but I'm guessing that 34 rock caissons and a cofferdam means that only the core is released so far (at least publicly that is).

I completely agree though that is is a very important positive step in the right direction.

Since the parking garage is under the building and below the water line of the river, won't there be one hell of a lot of work on digging and damn making before the foundation starts?

Since they have to go six levels down, the best way to do that is "top-down", same as Parkview, RiverEast recently and a few others in the past 15 years. Elysian should have also been top down IMO.

Well, if you really want to get technical, which apparently you do, when the building reaches 125 stories, it's still 25 stories short of completion, not a sure thing by any means.

There actually potholing the site again. Massive amounts of concrete have been unearthed around the area where the core will be.

Site Prep is not construction, I don't see how anyone could debate this.

I have to agree. While the base is far more detailed, and does now have more of that Calatrava feel (read: looking like the mouth of a Baleen Whale), the overall look for me isn't nearly as eye-catching..

God.. I hope it doesn't turn out like one of those godawful mirrored-gold-windowed monstrosities going up in Dubai.

What a friggin disappointment this is...

it was just posted today that the palmolive bldg is turning the beacon back on. how cool would it have been if a beacon were atop chicago spire, sending out light throughot chicagoland and (no doubt) as far as michigan

By the same token, before I became involved on SSC and SSP, the following conversation wouldn't have made any sense to me:

Q: "Is the building under construction ?"

A: "No, we're just digging."

Finally, a shot of the location with some surroundings to it.
I'm not good with figuring out locations with just the name of the roads...
