I think any supertall skyscraper is cool in and of the fact that it is supertall. but the design of this building is terrible. I think it would look better if the top of it was flat.

The design used to have a flat top.

No one liked it.

There was a version that had a flat-top----everyone was pretty much appalled by it.

Can't please everyone, ya know?

I gather that we just found the one person who would have preffered the flat top.

On another note, I found a Chicagoan, on a sports-related forum, who's bitter about SOM not designing the Spire.

What he means are in fact, the lobby areas. I just noticed this msyelf when looking at thechicagospire.com website. They've added an additional 2 renderings if you go to the photos section that shows two very brown-styled motifs. My guess though is that despite the fact it is all (structurally) smooth on the tower's legs now and the lobby is brown, that these in actuality are just structural models aside from the glass and paneling facade.

In other words, I think what we've seen close up will be the final product but to show off the lobby detail, it's far easier to hide some of the geometry and glass at the main level to showcase the inside. The same thing is done at times for renderings of buildings where the windows and other aspects are removed just to show the structural components. To show both in a rendering is oftentimes far too busy and complex to distinguish .

Whether the end result is that radial notched brown decor, or something different, it's interesting to say the least. I do hope it looks better in person - what if all that was rich, beautiful wood and not just stark panels?

For now though, I think we should reserve judgement until we see something final. Two photos showing a relatively different structure are a bit hard to go on and gauge as to whether it'll be built exactly like that (if they forego the blue I mean). Once we are able to see more renderings, we'll have a better idea .

Thanks for the updates on this guys!

According to Tom in Chicago at SSP, it's still far from happening.

Why are we always asking him his opinion again?

Glad you finally made it to the party, friend.

LloydGeorge basically said, on another thread, that the equipment being assembled on the site signifies little. He maintains the project is simply not viable.

Surprising that his name isn't "Thomas"...

I think the photos above are proof enough that this project is moving into construction with haste.

Taken 5 minutes ago. I'm about to go to lunch, so I'll walk over there to see if this is really going to be for caissons.

I think (don't quote me on that) the work shown will be related to dewatering work.
