good lord, didn't think this was due to start so soon, but no sooner than I've had a weekend in Chicago (May) then the site activity starts cranking up. Exciting stuff. Bvictor1 - you're the Chicago Spire site stalker!

I thought they said the ramps would be one of the first things to be constructed so as to allievated construction traffic down Water Strret. Looks like that was just blowing smoke and there may be a time where 20 concrete trucks will be lined up down Water street. We'll see.

They also said DuSable will be used as a staging area. I don't see any signs of that, but it's still way to early to expect that.

High Rises, Low Blows
Donald Trump lands the first punch in the battle of the Big Towers and Big Egos
David Bernstein

Move over, Rosie. The Donald’s got a new punching bag: Chicago Spire developer Garrett Kelleher. The braggadocian real-estate mogul came to Chicago recently to pump up sagging sales of his $850-million Chicago tower. While in town, he made sure to throw a few verbal jabs at Kelleher’s proposed condominium project, the 2,000-foot-tall twisting spire on the lakefront designed by starchitect Santiago Calatrava. As proposed, it would be the country’s tallest building, and it has grabbed much of the spotlight from Trump’s skyscraper: thus, the turf war. “It’s not a good-looking building,” says Trump, of the Spire. “It looks like a large, slightly deformed *****.” As for Kelleher, a developer based in Dublin, Trump adds: “He’s not big enough, strong enough, or wealthy enough to build this building.” Could it be that Trump’s got size envy? Though he once boasted that his Chicago tower would be the world’s tallest, Trump says no: “I can do a taller building, if I wanted to—-but I don’t.” He claims that his buyers didn’t want the building to be a terrorism target. Yet, for a project in Toronto, Trump added two stories and a large antenna to a planned residential skyscraper to give his building the “tallest” honors over a rival developer’s tower. Kelleher, who rarely grants interviews, declined comment. Thomas Murphy, a spokesman for Kelleher’s firm, also pulled punches. “We don’t comment on other developers’ projects or their comments on our project,” he says.

I read that some issues still have to be cleared up before construction officially gets underway.

Some members at other forums seem to think the tower is u/c, but it really isn't yet.

Kelleher, class, pure class. Trump, well you know. A media ***** with much less character.

gee, you guys dont muck around.
a 40storey tower for sydney would take a year of planning, another year for approvals then maybe it may start.
good stuff

“He’s not big enough, strong enough, or wealthy enough to build this building.”

...unfortunately, Trump may be right. This could end up being the next Skybridge financially speaking.

The Chicago condominium market is completely saturated right now. While it's not a total bust-out, it has corrected itself to be more in line with the rest of the country. In all actuality, the rental market is booming right now.

I do hope Kelleher can pull it off. I would hate for him to go down in the annals of Chicago developer history with Scott Toberman and his ill-fated 7 S. Dearborn tower or the Miglin-Beitler tower.

It could be that the financial institution, including Anglo-Irish bank will take a wait and see attitude towards this project. If Kelleher can prove to be a quality developer and get the foundation work in on bufget or for that matter under budget then he;s proven that he can manage a large project, get the right sub contractors and get them to do the work on budget.

If he can prove all this the lenders will go ahead a grant the money needed.
If Kelleher blows the foundation work, it goes bust.

In my opinion. Kelleher throughout the project has shown an ability to get things done. The marketing, the approvals the design. This he his legacy right here. This will be Kellhers one and only focus for the next 4 years. You'll see him age 10 years, but I bet he's enjoying it.

On the flipside, questions have been raised about Trump's financial wherewithal.

And I daresay Kelleher's got a helluva lot more going for him than did Toberman.
