Are there going to be any parking garages or parking lots for this tower?

How far is it to public transportation from the tower?

6 or 7 floors of underground parking. I can't remember the exact number. Public Transit isn't really close by. But the people paying the extreme prices for units in the Spire are not likely to take Public Transit anyway.

Can you imagine paying 10-20 million for a unit then jumping on a bus or the "L".

Seriously! It's still hard to believe that this is actually happening now! Jeez, I still remember the day this was first announced as the Fordham Spire.

Also, a celebratory meet up would rawk. Granted, the last time I posted anything was like a year ago, but I was still a lurker!

Glad to hear that things are rolling along nicely in with the construction process. I wonder when the floor plans to the Chicago Spire will be available? LOL not that I plan to purchasing a unit; just curious as to what others may be buying.

You are absolutely correct. After reading the WTC1 forum I say many from NYC would agree and are somewhat embarrassed by the slowness of that project.

The Chicago Spire is officially under construction

Wednesday, August 01, 2007

Chicago, IL, US (NCS) - The Chicago Spire is now officially under construction, according to Tom Murphy, the lawyer for developer Garrett Kelleher, president of Shelbourne Development, Ltd. of Ireland.

“We broke ground on June 25th pursuant to a permit issued by the City for the deep rock caissons which with the concrete core are the main support for the building,” Murphy said. “The permit was issued to our contractor the Case Foundation Company.”

The sales office will open on the 18th floor of the NBC Tower at 455 North Cityfront Plaza Drive in late September, and international marketing will begin soon after.

According to Murphy, the team will not seek financing for the project until the first quarter of 2008.

Final plans for the twisting, 150-story residential tower, which will include 1,200 condominiums and an underground parking garage, were approved by the Plan Commission on April 19th and the City Council on May 9th.

Now that the infamous tower has finally broken ground, residents can witness the awe as it climbs to the sky and becomes the tallest building in North America.

After weeks of prep work, caisson drilling began on Tuesday for the 2,000-foot Spire which was designed by Spanish architectural celeb Santiago Calatrava. Calatrava is also known for his design of the Athens Olympics sports complex and the Milwaukee Art Museum addition.

“We have initiated weekly construction meetings to answer neighbors’ questions with SOAR (Streeterville Organization of Active Residents), the alderman and mayor’s offices and the East Water Place and Riverview Associations,” said Murphy.“ Those meetings are Mondays at

Filming for documentary

I had watched a documentary in Discovery Channel about Burj Dubai. Also recently, there was one about another super tall in Shanghai.

I am wondering but in the same time assuming that there has to be an archive/documentary filming for this development for the same reason that may be released on a documentary channel.

Can't we talk about something fun, like how Chicago Spire is going to have to move 700 initial units at 1200 bucks/sf before they can even start the superstructure in a market that's basically dead and will remain so because it's oversaturated...???

I am concerned this project, in such a visible location on the drive, is going to get half way up, and then is going to suddenly die...think Skybridge several times, or Ray Chin's project in Streeterville from a few years back. I understand the "special financing" everyone keeps talking about, but the units still have to sell. Kelleher is selling the equivalent of 6 condominium projects on one site in one phase. That's a lot of product.

I'd like to pose a question: Does the financial success of a project factor into our appreciation of it? Should it if we are considering the responsibility of developers and architects to contribute to successful urbanism? If architecture is at its core a service oriented profession, should an architect in some way be judged by how well he/she has "solved the problem"?

Thank you. I'll shut up and wait to get hammered now.

Every time I pass this site, I marvel at how small it is. It has water light on two sides! How fantastic it'll be to see something as tall as CS there, bathed in light.

I'm with Helmut. Who's the GC for the project? Who's soliciting bids from the subs.? Any info on the Dodge Report? If nothing sells, how does it get built? I'll only START to believe this when concrete trucks show up and it comes out of the ground.
