Lets be honest...

The design that has no spire and a rounded top looks frightfully similar to a sex toy... I dont want its intimate name (no pun intended) to be "the sex toy tower" or something to that effect... dont you think the designers have realized this?

Here's a model of the new design as presented to IIT students back on 12/19/06 which was posted on SSP by spyguy.

Wow!

Several things:

First, this looks much better than I thought it would, and I was looking forward to how it would look. Second, it looks a lot less like a sex toy than the designs we were playing with (e.g., on SSP), unless you're hard up for sex toys. Third: The torque looks far less tortured than CS3, and far more elegant.

And fourth: It looks like a whirling spire again, deserving of its name...and of its city

How can anyone like this design? Maybe in Dubai this could fly, but even those Dubaians would say, "wow, this building is about as basic as you get, as effortless a design as you can have, and it looks like a sex toy on top of all of that!"

I do, and so do many others. The latest design is wonderful and I hope they build it as soon as possible.

And I wouldn't go by Dubai's standards to decide what is classy and what is not.

I'm a fan of the newest version.. think it is a big step beyond the blunt ending top prior. i still like the original version the best though..

My opinion: Calatrava nailed it and has perfected the design. Build it.

When this becomes a reality, all will look up at this building and think of it as as nothing less than spectacular.

Speak for yourself.

I really think this is the worst design yet.
It kind of sounds like you just want a 2000' tower no matter how it looks... you just want it built. You want them to finalize the design as quickly as possible, get it approved, and get it built.

great building, but...

...will enough people be willing to shell out the obscenely-high prices per square foot ($1000)? Although he might market it towards the international jet-set, I'm not convinced Chicago is glamorous enough to draw that caliber of buyer. We're just not on the same level as NY, London, HK, Dubai. So that leaves the current market of high-income downtown'ers (lawyers, businessmen, a few wealthy families and some sports figures.) I'm not convinced there are enough potential buyers, especially with all the other high-end buildings going up that are just as luxurious, but going for half that $/sqft.

He did speak for himself hence "my opinion" unless he edited his post after you sent yours. Nonetheless he spoke for himself. And Im not sure how you got all of your post from his since it doesnt even hint at anything you just said.

I digress.

It was towards this statement: "When this becomes a reality, all will look up at this building and think of it as as nothing less than spectacular."

No not at all. I thought Design "C" was not very good and at times really didn't care if it got built or sometimes leaned towards wishing it didn't get built. The Chicago skyline is a great skyline and want nothing that is sub standard.

You are dead on when you say
"You want them to finalize the design as quickly as possible, get it approved, and get it built"

Yep, but I know this is just opinions. I don't understand how you could like design "C" but not really going to question it. I really do love this new design. As I said, it'll probably be way more breath taking in real life than what you see in just a model.

I like this design alot - the tapered top looks alot better than the horribly blunt ending before.

Although, if there really is a tower of light at the top (and not just at the various fin points as in previous renderings)... well, while to me it doesn't look very phallic right now (aside from the obviousness that it is a tall building)... I'm afraid that having a solid beam of light project out of that at the top will be almost obscene.
