The road ahead

October 1, 2007

3. Parts of lower Lake Shore Drive near Navy Pier will be closed until late January to allow construction of two new vehicle ramps for the Chicago Spire development. Temporary lane closings will be in effect, starting today, from just north of lower Wacker Drive to Illinois Street. Also, over the next month, drivers can expect lane reductions on Illinois, east of Lake Shore Drive going into Navy Pier. Pedestrian access will not be affected.

Good to know this project is progressing in many ways.

It's crazy how small the site is for such a huge building... at least compared to the WTC site...

Yeah but the original WTC site was/is huge - considering that there will be 4-5 new buildings on a site where there were original two supertalls and a low/mid rise hotel. I think for a single building, the site for the Chicago Spire is sufficient, also considering that the southern half of the site will be a reflecting pool plaza with a sculpture.

Lakeshore Drive is a VERY KEWL drive, offering some of the best urban views anywhere along its entire length.

What strikes me most about this project is how low key it is in the Chicagoland metro area. I am eagerly awaiting the responses from the public as they are driving into the downtown Chicago area and seeing this thing really beginning to rise by the lakefront in a couple of years - "Woah!!! Where did THAT come from?!?!?!?!".

It does surprise the hell out of me how many people in the Chicago area still have never heard of the Spire. With how obsessed the city was with holding the record with Sears for so many years, you'd think the local media would make a bigger deal out of it.

totally agree. I am very surprised actually. I bet if you poll most Chicagoans off the street they would be surpirsed to know a 2000 footer is rising on the lakefront. (and a twisting one at that)

and like Mike said, there is going be some huge gapper delays on LSD once this one pokes its head above the drive.

Also, great updates harryc, much appreciated, nice work.
