This WikiPedia article may help:
Quote:
A slurry wall is a type of wall used to build tunnels, to open cuts, and to lay foundations in areas of soft earth close to open water or with a high ground water table.

A set of guide walls, typically 1 metre (3.3 ft) deep and 0.5 metre (1.6 ft) thick, is first constructed on the surface. A special clamshell-shaped digger is used to excavate the slurry trench guided by the guide walls. The trench is kept filled with slurry (a mixture of bentonite and water) at all times to prevent collapse. Once the first trench is completed to design depth, or bedrock, an adjacent trench is dug in the same manner. Eventually, once a particular length is reached, a reinforcing cage is lowered into the slurry-filled pit and the pit is filled with concrete from the bottom up using tremie pipes. The concrete displaces the bentonite slurry which is pumped out and recycled.

I have to join the praise for the most incredible pics. Thank you

The picture here is a rack of tremie pipe sections. The separator will show up shortly and is really just a tank farm (they'll look like shipping containers).

So can anyone explain a little bit more about the formwork going up around the area for the core? I this just a guide for caissons/core work in general, or does this provide any alternative function? If it was just a guide I don't know why the would have the taller verticle pieces, or why it would be made this large as opposed to using another type of material besides steel.

Ohh, don't worry I've been here. I know that they have been prepping the site for a while and putting out tubes and stuff. But now they are bringing out the actual machines and construction stuff. I'm sorry that I don't know the technical names but 'stuff' is how I am going to label them.

The thread is getting too long to go through... could anyone briefly summarize the current status and outline next stages timeline?

Cheers for the pics! Getting really exiting now!

About Spire but also Chicago as a whole, has anyone been able to make a rendering of what Chicago is supposed to look like in ten years?
I keep on reading about all the great projects going up or being proposed at least and I just cannot get a clear view in my mind of what the skyline will look like in a decade or so.
I don't know Chicago really well unfortunatly...

Anyone up fot the task?
Even if it takes a month.
