i'm willing to put myself on the spiraling wall of shame. anyone wish to join me? just admit when the plans for this one were first made you thought it didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting off the ground.

this one is advancing quite quickly ... so, when is the money supposed to run out and construction subsequently halted? Or, will Chicago after dozens of failed new tallest actually get one?

Very interesting read about the engineering for the foundation's. I'd love to see the calculations I'd bet they cover afew 100 pages alone.

" The Chicago Spire " ...... the Drill Bit immortalized!

Never mind the, possible, threat of Terrorism ..... Time will tell if this (Chicago) " Spire " superskyscraper, like an astounding number emerging across the modern world, will withstand the laws of physics, natural elements and structural load.

" The Chicago Spire " ...... the Drill Bit immortalized!

dozens of failed new tallest attempts in chicago? really, dozens? where are you getting that from?

would you care to name these dozens of failed chicago attempts at a new tallest?

since the completion of the sears tower in 1974, there have been two, count 'em two, previous *SERIOUS* attempts to best the sears tower that failed - the Miglin/Beitler Skyneedle and 7 South Dearborn. sure you could also bring up SOM's old design for wolf point, or that odd-ball Bofill-designed project 2,000 scheme or even the various over-achieving schemes for a half-mile tall chicago world trade center back in the early 80s, but none of those qualified as proper concrete proposals that ever went through any kind of approvals process or anything of the sort, they were merely developer/architect day dreams.

as for whether the chicago spire ever gets completed as currently proposed, only time can tell. right now i'm having way too much fun following the construction progress made thus far to worry myself with the unknowable.

i'm all for skepticism, urbanpin, but is the $$$$ of the current work even warranted if there isn't a degree of certainty that it will go all the way up?
