Nov 30 - AM

View from above [ full set - zoomable http://picasaweb.google.com/harry.r..../400NLSDCSHeli ]

"Whaler" ? kayosthery (SSP) has probably figured this one out - used instead of the usual I-Beams for shoring up the sheet pile ( custom curved I-Beams $$$ ).

These rebars ( sticking out from wall - circled ) would keep the ring from descending as I had speculated.

Normal sheet wall with standard straight I-Beams ( 353 N Clark )

What next ?

Anyone know what the PVC is for ?

From the gate

This is going to be a favorite project for lots of people with all the right on the scene updates!

Do any of the builders visit SSC, just to see what they did that day?

The PVC pipe, looks to be for sleeve's, or where pipe(s) or conduit(s) cross thru concrete walls or floors, save's on concrete coring costs.

Awesome pictures!

I'm curious... How condo sales on Chicago Spires going if they opens their sale centers? Does this real estate market slowdown across the nation affect the sales of Chicago Spires condos?

Does anyone know why they are already putting concrete into the whole when they havnt dug it all out yet???
Is it a permanent part of the towers foundations or something???
This construction method is really confusing.

Informed speculation [ kayosthery of SSP ] is that this is a brace. Normally steel I-beams are used, but with this curve special - expensive - I-Beams would be required. They already have the stuff to do RC ( Reinforced Concrete ) and this works. Called a "whaler"

The 6th and 7th photos in http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...postcount=3073
should clear it up

I handed an assignment in on caisons which I handed in last week. I couldn't find a decent picture of them on the internet until today. Damn.

The height is fantastic; but I don't quite like the design... I mean, I don't think it's nearly as bad as some of Dubai's monstruosities, for example; but, for me, it just doesn't go with Chicago's beautiful skyline... Maybe a simpler structure (like a stretched out version of the Sears Tower) would look better...

JHC didn't "go" with Chicago's skyline when it was built, either. And today, we're hardpressed to imagine Chicago's skyline without it. The same will be true with respect to the Spire.
