Try ~30 threads for the Burj Dubai...

and 4 for Chicago Spire.

I live in Chicago and LOVE Chicago...but I'm not so sure about this tower... I WANT it to look great and stunning...but it is sooooo new and different from anything else here.... I don't want this hideous "flavor of the month" architecture experiment to be here smack dab in the middle of the skyline... I hope I'll have egg on my face in a few years when it's all completed.... but who knows??

I get labelled as "jealous" and anti-arab everytime I post about Dubai and some of the horrendous buildings there....[ however, some of them are really stunning and amazing]. I'm just not that impressed with HOW they are being built and the urban fabric that will result when it's all said and done...

I really like Trump, Waterview and 300 N. Lasalle.... but the Spire does not get me excited... I'm taking a "wait and see" approach on the Spire...

really, sometimes I wonder if people on these forums are complete d/d nerds or in junior high....

I still say the burj is a complete rip off of chicago native Frank Lloyd Wright's "Illinois" the Spire is an amazing design.

Does anyone know how many feet (or meters) there are in between the East facade of the Spire and Lake Shore Drive?

Thanks.

Saying "Ugly" is a statement.
Explaining why you find it ugly is an opinion.

davidearl..

i agree with everything you said.

dubai does have some ugly designs.. seems they are swapping colors/crowns on half those buildings every time I check..

imho, the spire is too big for being so close to the water.. reminds me of 2ifc in Hong Kong.. now if it were back from LSD about six blocks... maybe..

Also, the twist was just a way to get six 'corners' into a floor.. (someone correct me if I'm wrong) in order to max the $ they could charge for the condos.. putting out a six-sided condo building 600 meters tall would have surely gotten the thumbs down... hmmmm... how about if we twist it!!... wala!! approval.

Also, it compliments nothing in Chicago.. just stands out... what an insult to the other buildings, architects, etc.

"with this building, we are back in the supertall game'... Chicago will live to regret this..

Well, i would agree that the twist is a way to get more corners, but the twist in this tower is more becouse it's Santiago Calatarva's particular style, his expression is with curves, and nature. Although i'm sure that multiple corners where part of the design criteria, he was chosen for this project becouse of his ability to make his work look more like sculpture, with a certain lightness to it.
Also, i do not agree with it complementing nothing, i believe it will complement the entire skyline, giving it a new fresh style, not only that there are a few more supertalls planned for the imediate area, so it won't dominate for to long.
And finally, Chicago, when it comes to skyscrapers, does NOT live to regret any of it's buildings, the skyscraper was born there, with no regrets..!!!!
