You obviously have no idea how this construction process will work. Yes, they do need a year to dig out the lot, if they didn't, the Spire would rise sooner then that.

It's not complicated.

Stunning and just ... wow. Such a nice and shiny (and inspiring) presentation!

Did anyone else have trouble with the movie link directly? I had to prompt to download it and watch it locally on my computer before I saw anything.

Wow, that's incredible. Yes I have no idea.. I did actually take a Contruction Engineering class in college and got an A more than 15 years ago, but am still surprised it takes a year to just DIG for the foundation of the Spire.. in comparison, how long will the actual construction UPwards take as projected right now?

It's not that easy, they're starting to build the tower while they're digging out the garage spaces, so it doesn't really matter how long they need to exvacate the whole space.

OK, so let's dig a hole for four years.. maybe then we have a foundation?

The whole year just seems more that I would have thought before they can start up.

Yeah. When I clicked on the link, it closed Mozilla Firefox.

The video is absolutely amazing though.
Some day I would like to go visit Chicago.

They dont have to wait a year before they can build up, they will probaly start building up after the foundations are done in March. They still need to dig out the parking structure.

They are not just digging a hole...

They are drilling caissons over 100 feet down to bedrock.
They are creating a wall around the site so Lake Michigan doesn't just flood on in when they excavate the entire site 7 floors down for the parking lot.
They are building on and off ramps connecting the site to LakeShore Drive.

No supertall skyscraper's foundation is complete overnight, which you seem to think should be the case. They are working mon-fri (sometimes weekends) from 8am to 8pm. Persistently complaining about it being "slow" will do absolutely nothing except piss people off, so just give it a rest.

Just saw the site plan, and the garage looks quite wide in relation to the rest of the structure. Is any part of the garage going to be located beneath the highway? I imagine it would be quite tricky to excavate beneath an active roadway.

Another question about the highway: Is the recently completed ramp permanent, or was it built to provide access to the site during construction?

Guys, please take it easy on newcomers who might ask repeat questions...who has the time to read the thousands of posts that have gone before?

They're starting to build up in March, the foundations are almost completed, but the garages are being built top-down, that's why the exvacation needs longer than normally. It really possible that the core goes above ground level, while the excavation of the garages isn't completed.

Not beneath the highway, but beneath one ramp.

It's permanent.

Also, what do you know, you are in Helsinki. The ground is so frozen there.

Eric
Well, it's frozen sometimes yes (or it used to be on winters). But first go check up where Finland is It's not an Ice Age here either. The climate in Helsinki is very close to New York right now.. and as far as I know, it ain't an Ice Age in NYC either.

That link to the presenting video someone posted is very well done. So bright and clear. It's a shame it focus too much to the small details like a water drop falling down. It's a bit hard to totally understand the tower itself.
