i went to chicago spire's homepage (thechicagospire.com) to check to see if they and anything new. Not only no increase. A complete and total reduction. Just a one paragraph blurb about the bldg with no links at all.

Chicago Spire: Will dark cloud over development affect it?
The front page of today's of New York Times has a story sure to make real estate developers in Chicago and elsewhere around the country shudder. It reports that the economic slump is likely to delay key parts of the Frank Gehry-designed, $4 billion Atlantic Yards project in Brooklyn, including an office tower and three residential buildings.

The news comes as people in Chicago architecture and real estate circles speculate on whether developer Garrett Kelleher, who has already started building the foundations of the Santiago Calatrava-designed Chicago Spire (at left), will be able to complete the project. While the twisting, 2,000-foot-tall Spire is planned as a single building, not a large complex like Atlantic Yards, its projected cost is nonetheless substantial--reportedly in excess of $1 billion.

But a spokeswoman for the Spire says things are moving along well and that units are selling briskly, particularly overeas, where the dollar's plunge makes the units more attractive to buyers. She's not disclosing sales numbers, however. Here's an edited transcript of our Q & A (my questions were sent to her on Wednesday):

Q. I hear Calatrava is in town today. I also hear that those shag-a-delic, Austin Powers-like studio apartments [called Gallery units] that I didn’t like so much are selling very well—so well that a second “tier” of them was added to the tower. True?

A. Yes, Calatrava was in town for meetings with the design team about the amenities space, etc. As for those Gallery units you didn't like so much, yes - they are extremely popular and sold quickly. We're adding more to The Chicago Spire.

Q. Are the Spire's caissons in yet and when will they be done?

A. Out of the 34 total Rock caissons, 16 are done (10 outer and 6 core). Out of the 98 Bell caissons, 32 are complete. The Lake Shore Drive ramp structure is complete and will be operational next month (April 2008)

Q. Has Garrett hired a superstructure contractor yet?

A. Negotiations are underway as we speak

Q. How many units are under contract?

A. Not disclosing, but can tell you we've been writing contracts literally from day-one.

Q. Are sales brisk in Europe because of the dollar being low?

A. Absolutely. Overseas sales are extremely brisk - Europe and Asia. The building is truly a global building and the 15-city marketing campaign with stops around the world (Dublin, Singapore, etc) has so-far been very successful. Over the next month, we'll have exhibitions in Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Shanghai - and expect those to be well received.

Q. Does the impending or already-started recession mean this dream will never happen?

A. Remember, this is a 4-year build and we've seen this type of economy before. The building is coming along quite well, it will have unrivalled amenities, and global buyers prove it will be a reality.

I've read some questions about the core size versus the total size. I hope this will help to answer it:

I love this picture. It shows almost as much progress for the building as the psychotic posting in that other website my signature in red refers to. Yes Rick this is a beautiful site.

The JAGOFFS in the other website (see signature in red one more time please) would hold the item in the photo as a shrine to be gold plated and auctioned off to one lucky bastard to put in his living room.

One day, this building will make it to the lobby level and THEN everybody can just let loose and throw a shindig followed by a postathon like you never seen before.

One thing...is there going to be some sort of amenity room or bar on top for the homeowners to go up or was that a concept they are not going for?

I also like the Russia Tower better. It has public access and the building is huge. The CS still will be a nice building. Real life should make it better looking than its renderings.

Too bad for NO OBSERVATION

The skyscrappre community would hope so, I mean if a massive country like Russia is gonna put their name on one tower as a status symbol, then it should beat out a tower merely symbolizing one city's status. not sure if that one will make sense, it's early in the day
