The Chicago spire is alright. I'm not wild about it, but I don't hate it either.

But to me it looks like something just as effective and beautiful could be built more traditionally and leave money for other projects.

This isn't a federal or civil project. It's privately funded.

Not to mention, the construction on this is likely being done cost-effectively, as the builders must answer to private banks and real estate trusts with billions at stake, not a government bureaucracy.

If this were a government project, you'd have 3 years of review in various committees, 20 different versions of the plan, and millions blown on consulting (and pocket-fattening) before the city council/department budget committee scrapped all the previous work and built a boxy, utilitarian building that pleased no one.

If it were clearly more profitable for the real estate companies to build a lot of smaller, simpler condo buildings, ithey would do so. Somebody is taking a financial risk on the theory that some people will pay insane amounts of money to own the highest residences in the Western hemisphere.

Though to be fair, the Soviets also produced this:

It's not that government is incapable of producing beautiful structures. Look at many of the old buildings in DC, or Federal Hall in New York. It's just that in the last 50 years or so, it's become the rule that buildings are discussed, rediscussed, planned, replanned, and then handed over to the idiot cousin who owns a construction business. The final project gets completed for 3 times the original cost, and is either so garishly awful that your gut instinct is to tear it down and start over, or is so bland and unoffensive in its concrete block and stucco aesthetic that nobody really cares. There is no craftsmanship in public buildings any more.

I wouldn't like it to be reported either. Doesn't mean it didn't happen!

Hm...I'm not as enthusiastic as you guys about the Chicago Spire.

I wonder if Calatrava himself has designed it?
Usually I like the designs of Calatrava. But this one is much overscaled and doesn't fit into the urban structure. Look at all the Lowrises near the Spire.
For me it seems to be just a supertall Tower to keep America and Chicago up in the Race about the tallest Skyscraper in the World.

Okay havesterofsorrows,

if I compare the Spire with the whole Skyline it fits pretty good.
But don't get me wrong.
In my opinion a Tower like the Spire has to be the Centre of a Cluster of Highrises about 300 m.
Unfortunately the surroundings of the Spire are only Lowrises a just few storys high.
If they gonna change the urban structure additional it would be a great and interesting project.

Yet it's just a single standing Tower, which doesen't fit into its neighbourhood.
